NEWS. . . BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT
Borussia Dortmund will be “devastated” as they face Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in the Champions League final, Jamie Carragher believes.
It looked like we were heading into the German final at Wembley after Bayern took the lead in their semi-final against Real on Wednesday night.
But two late goals from substitute Joselu changed the tie and took the Spanish champions to a record 18th UCL final.
They will face Dortmund, who disappointed PSG in the semi-finals, and will be playing in their third final and first since losing to Bayern at Wembley in 2013.
One would expect Dortmund to be content to see Bayern lose and some other terrible clash against them, but Carragher believes Dortmund would have been “desperate” to take on their rivals from Der Klassiker.
“[Real Madrid] will be the favourites,” the Liverpool legend told CBS.
“In fact, I think Borussia Dortmund will also be devastated. They will do so because they will face Real Madrid in the final of the European Cup.
“They must have felt that they know Bayern Munich better, they beat them when they played them away from home.
“I think Borussia Dortmund, watching at home, would have desperately wanted to play Bayern Munich. “
It is true that BVB won 2-0 in Munich in March, but it should be noted that they lost the second leg in November 4-0.
As Carragher mentions, Real Madrid will be the heavy favourites to win the Champions League in record time, with their efforts this season led by English superstar Jude Bellingham.
The midfielder signed from Dortmund last summer on a contract worth up to £115m, and the 20-year-old is unable to face his former club for the first time.
“It’s crazy. I can’t. It might just happen like this,” Bellingham said after the game.
“My first final. In England, Dortmund. Thanks to them they deserve their place in the final.
“It will be great to see old friends again. I’m going to think about hanging up the phone and leaving the messages for tomorrow. “
The Champions League final at Wembley will take place on Saturday, June 1 at 8pm.
