Jefferson County Local Makes History as First Female Official at WVSSAC Playoff Game

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio Valley local recently made history in the football box in West Virginia’s first playoff game.

Winfield’s emphatic 57-21 playoff win over Lewis County last Friday was uneventful, but a closer look shows anything but.

The umpiring team included the first to play in a WVSSAC playoff game, and she happens to be Cathy Moro, a resident of Jefferson County.

Moro was part of a seven-person team that included some Ohio Valley officials as well as referee Butch Minkemyer.

Moro has been at Ohio Valley college games on both sides of the river since 2019.

He hopes the attention paid to it will attract more people dressed in stripes.
