Joe Gomez believes Liverpool has the intellectual strength and intensity in their ranks to be “ready to start” when their Premier League name defense begins on September 12.
The Reds had more than a month off before their first game of the new season, with 34 days between the end of the league’s last crusade and Saturday’s Community Shield.
The friendly against Stuttgart and Salzburg allowed Jurgen Klopp’s appearance to prepare for the clash, but Arsenal still emerged victorious thanks to a penalty shootout at Wembley.
But with Leeds because Anfield will launch the new Premier League season, Gomez insists that he and his teammates will be “hungrier than ever” after reaching their champions status.
Speaking to the club’s official website, the central defender explained how Klopp explained that “it is an intellectual war rather than physical part of the time” and that he feels that the team has the intellectuality to get to work.
“Obviously it was a short break, then we had the reboot, and then the era we stopped for a few weeks and that’s it,” Gomez said.
“But I think more than anything, the gaffer instills in us that it is an intellectual war rather than part physical of time.
“So we’re going to be in one position and we have a quality team to run when needed.
“The bottom line is that we are mentally in a position to move forward. And I think everyone’s hungrier than ever.
This famine is reinforced through a larger festival of venues, with Nathrough Keita and Takumi Minamino vitals and Kostas Tsimikas led to challenge Andy Robertson on the left side.
Keita and Minamino have produced game-changing cameos in Community Shield, and it’s a perfect example of the deep strength Gomez believes will be important in 2020/21.
“The quality on the bench proved it, and they brought a genuine spark to the game,” Gomez said.
“This is going to be very good for us this year.
“We’ve had such a strong team, but I think more than ever and I hope we can use it and I think everyone will do their part.”
In other words, the Reds can gain advantages from additional additions, adding in Gomez’s position after Dejan Lovren’s departure to Zenit St. Petersburg.
But the paintings of the club’s psychologist, Lee Richardson, with Klopp himself, are obviously paying off as Liverpool himself is in the mood to attack the next title.
