NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says more and more NFL groups will welcome enthusiasts as the normal 2020 season progresses, but it doesn’t look like the Giants are one of those groups.
The Giants and Jets will open the season by betting their games at home at an empty MetLife stadium, and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said in July that he will “continue to paint heavily with groups as situations replace” in the coming weeks and months. But Giants co-owner John Mara said Thursday that he is “not optimistic at all” that things would replace to the point where the team welcomes game enthusiasts.
Mara also disagreed with Goodell’s statement that there is no competitive merit for being able to bet against fans, but added that the Giants will simply have to deal with it.
“That’s how it’s going to be, ” said Mara, through Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.”We have to settle for this being a year.It won’t necessarily be fair in terms of competition. That’s the way it is.We have to deal with that.”
The Giants and Jets are two of 26 groups that will play at least their first house game of the year among the enthusiasts present.
