Jose Mourinho sacked Roma to put even more pressure on Newcastle manager Eddie Howe

Roma have officially announced that Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect, with his exit putting even more pressure on under-fire Newcastle boss Eddie Howe. Mourinho’s departure was confirmed following Roma’s defeat to AC Milan over the weekend as the Italian heavyweights slipped to ninth place in the Serie A table.

Mourinho arrived at Roma in the summer of 2021 and made history by winning the first Europa Conference League at the end of his first season in charge. However, its effects have since diminished, with Roma winning 29 problems in 20 league games in the current campaign.

The news of Mourinho’s exit was confirmed by Roma on Tuesday morning, with owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin saying: “We would like to thank Jose on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club.

“We will have good memories of his time at Roma, but we believe that a quick replacement is the most productive thing for the club. We wish Jose and his assistants all the best in their long-term endeavors. “

Mourinho won 68 of his 138 games at Roma, but was at the centre of disciplinary issues that overshadowed the team’s performances. Last week, he was sacked for the second time in a row when Roma were beaten by Lazio in a violent and chaotic derby in the Italian capital.

The 60-year-old’s final game in charge was Sunday’s defeat to AC Milan, a result which meant that Roma had won just one of their last six league matches. It remains to be seen where Mourinho will go from here, with the Portuguese coach having been tentatively linked with the top job at Newcastle.

The Magpies have been widely tilted to a replacement in the front office, with Howe having endured a difficult season at St James’ Park. Newcastle are currently 10th in the Premier League table with just nine wins in their squad and have exited the Champions League after completing the back end of their organisation last month.

The club’s Saudi sponsors are “fascinated” with the idea of appointing a famous coach like Mourinho to update Howe before the start of next season, according to Gazzetta dello Sport. However, only time will tell if the sacked Roma boss will take the reins at Tyneside, and Howe is likely to have time to turn things around at the moment.
