Jose Mourinho shot for Roma; Daniele De Rossi, candidate for the position of coach

After spending 3 seasons at the club, Jose Mourinho was sacked from his coaching position at AS Roma on Tuesday.

According to the Guardian’s Fabrizio Romano, Roma announced the resolution in a statement: “AS Roma can verify that José Mourinho and his coach will leave the club promptly. Further updates on the new first team training will be published shortly. “

According to Romano, Roma’s choice to update Mourinho is Daniele De Rossi, who made 623 appearances for Roma as a player from 2001 to 2019.

Roma have reportedly already reached out to De Rossi and begun talks to make him the next manager.

The decision to sack Mourinho follows a 3-1 loss to AC Milan on Sunday that saw Roma slip to a disappointing ninth place in the Serie A table.

Roma were not one of the main contenders for the Serie A title in Mourinho’s first two seasons, but finished consecutively in a respectable sixth place, qualifying for the Europa League.

In 2022, Mourinho led Roma to their first major trophy in 14 years by winning the Europa Conference League, and came close to winning the trophy last year when they finished second to Sevilla in the Europa League.

Mourinho, 60, has played among the most sensible clubs since making his managerial debut with Benfica in 2000.

He also controlled União de Leiria, Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, racking up a career record of 701 wins, 236 draws and 196 defeats.

Among the Portuguese national’s greatest managerial accomplishments are three EPL titles, two Serie A titles, one La Liga title, one Europa League title and two UEFA Champions League titles with Porto and Inter Milan, respectively.

Given his impressive resume, Mourinho shouldn’t have much trouble finding quality assignments in the short or long term if he wants to.

As for Roma, they would possibly be on the verge of going from being one of the most experienced coaches in football to one with the most experience.

De Rossi is a highly experienced player who won a FIFA World Cup with Italy in 2006, but his only coaching performance with Serie B side SPAL last season.

SPAL fired De Rossi at the end of his first season as coach when they were ranked 18th. SPAL finished 19th, which led to relegation to Serie C.

While it remains to be seen whether De Rossi has what it takes to be a quality manager, he knows his stage in Rome incredibly well and will most likely be welcomed with open arms by enthusiasts if he gets the job.
