Jurgen Klopp will step down as manager of the Liverpool football team at the end of this season, the club announced on Friday.
The charismatic German coach joined Liverpool in 2015 and led the legendary club to win the European Champions League in 2019 and the English Premier League in 2020.
During that tenure, the Reds won the FA Cup, England’s first knockout competition, as well as the Carabao Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.
“It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy,” the 56-year-old, who previously managed German giant Borussia Dortmund, said on Liverpool’s club website.
“For sure I love everything about this club, I love everything about the city, I love everything about our fans, I love the team, I love the staff, I love everything. But the fact that I’m making this resolution anyway makes you think I’m convinced. That’s the one I have to take.
Liverpool is owned by Fenway Sports Group, the American conglomerate founded by John Henry, which also includes Major League Baseball’s Boston Red Sox, National Hockey League’s Pittsburgh Penguins and NASCAR’s RFK Racing.
Klopp replaced Brendan Rodgers at the helm in October 2015, when Liverpool was languishing in 10th place in the Premier League. In the following year, Klopp led the club to a fourth-place finish in his first full season in charge.
Since then, he has turned the team into a perennial contender for the squad, coming within striking distance of the Premier League trophy against Manchester City on several occasions. He is also a cult icon in the hometown of the team of the same squad and was awarded with Liverpool City. Freedom in 2022.
Liverpool is the most successful English football club in terms of number of awards, having won 68 trophies in its 132-year history.
His successor is yet to be announced, but Klopp still has a lot to play for this season. Liverpool are currently top of the Premier League table with 17 games to play and earlier this week cemented their position in the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea. on February 25. They will face Norwich City in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday.
“I’m like a real sports car, still not smart enough, I can still drive at 160, 170, 180mph, but I’m the only one who sees the tank gauge go down,” Klopp said in his speech. Interview for the club’s website
“The outside world doesn’t see that, that’s good, so you go until as long as we have to go, but then you need a break. In this case, you need to go to the petrol station.”
