Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes Jarell Quansah has highlighted his potential by generating “top-notch play” in tricky situations at Bournemouth.
The 20-year-old defender helped the much-changed Reds level the Carabao Cup quarter-final against West Ham with a confident performance in Wednesday’s 2-1 win at the Vitality Stadium.
The England Under-21 foreigner was forced to contend with relentless rain and swirling winds in his fourth senior start for the Reds as storm Ciaran battered the south coast.
Manager Klopp praised the professionalism of his players in their fight against the elements and praised centre-back Quansah.
“It was good,” said the German.
“Under those circumstances, wow! There are so many balls that it’s hard to judge, to estimate where it lands. “
“He did well. On the ball, Caoimhin’s (Kelleher) idea is “give him the ball a lot and we’ll see what he can do”.
“He did well there. Yes, it’s the most productive game, absolutely.
Quansah made his Liverpool debut at Newcastle at the end of August, having spent the second part of last season on loan at League One club Bristol Rovers.
The 20-year-old was named the boy of the attack among Reds fans after Darwin Nunez’s surprise 70th-minute goal in Dorset secured a place in the quarter-finals.
Cody Gakpo made his first start since injury at Tottenham on Sept. 30 in the opener of the first half before Justin Kluivert’s first goal in English football brought the point back to Bournemouth.
Substitute Nunez unleashed a quick shot into the top right corner just 10 minutes after coming off the bench to find the net for the third straight game, earning praise from fellow scorer Gakpo.
“It was a goal,” the Dutch striker told Liverpool’s website.
“I think for the players it’s not a surprise because you see their quality every time in education and also in games.
“He’s in a wonderful race now and we’re here for him and him too, cheering us on to keep this fantastic race going for him and for us as well. “
Dutch striker Kluivert is hoping to be more prolific after breaking his duck at Bournemouth in his ninth appearance since his summer transfer from Roma.
The diminutive 24-year-old equalized the Cherries with a close-range header from Alex Scott’s corner in the 64th minute.
“I’m very pleased about this,” he told afcbtv. We had to wait a bit, but I’m glad it happened and I hope to score many more.
“He’s great with his head, I don’t win much in my career. “
He added: “I’m incredibly proud of the guys. We fought until the end and unfortunately they took the lead with a wonderful goal.
“We can take a lot of positives and, with mentality, go into the next game (against Manchester City on Saturday). “
