Khadija Shaw breaks WSL goal records in Manchester City win

Once again, Khadija Shaw led Manchester City’s advance into the Women’s Super League with two goals behind West Ham, 3 records in the process.

After Leila Ouahabi gave Manchester City the lead in the first minute at the Academy Stadium, the first of Shaw’s goals came two minutes later. It’s his 20th league goal of the season, equalling his tally from last season with three games remaining.

It also makes him a time to score 20 goals in two other Women’s Super League seasons. Only Australian Sam Kerr had achieved this feat, scoring 21 goals for Chelsea in the 2020/21 season and 20 more in the following campaign.

The goal is Shaw’s 49th goal in Women’s Super League history and she only had to wait another 19 minutes to reach the 50th in her 57th appearance in the competition. She has become the eleventh woman in history to achieve this feat and did so in the second-fewest games after Arsenal’s Vivianne Miedema, who was the first to score 50 goals in 50 games. Shaw is only the second non-European after Kerr to score 50 goals in the Women’s Super League.

Her 21st goal of the season is a new personal high for the Jamaican, surpassing last season’s 20. With three games remaining, they have every chance of breaking the all-time record of 22 goals in a single season. shared through Aston Villa’s Miedema (2018/19) and Rachel Daly.

22 is also Shaw’s most productive total in Europe in the 2019/20 season. It was enough to earn her the name of France’s most no-nonsense goalscorer, something she has yet to achieve in England after being beaten by Daly last season. Currently 8 goals ahead of second-placed Lauren James, it now turns out that Shaw would possibly not win the Women’s Super League Golden Boot next month.

Last month, Shaw was Manchester City’s all-time brightest goalscorer in all competitions. Today’s two goals take her to 72 goals in just 83 appearances for the club since signing for them from Bordeaux in June 2020. For his country, he is even more prolific, scoring 55 goals in just 42 overseas appearances.

Shaw also became the first woman in Women’s Super League history to register a goal in ten consecutive league games since 17 December 2023. She scored in nine of those games and scored Lauren Hemp’s first goal in the other, a 2–0 win over Leicester City on Feb. 4.

The 5-0 win over West Ham gave Manchester City a three-point lead over champion Chelsea, who have a game in hand. If Chelsea and Manchester City win all their remaining league games, the two groups will finish with points on 58 points each. and the name will be for difference of purpose.

After Chelsea won 3-0 this week, Manchester City retook the lead with their five-goal margin of victory. Currently, there is a three-goal gap between the two groups in what promises to be a very close race for the name.

Their win today means Manchester City are the first team in Women’s Super League history to win 13 consecutive matches in the same season, surpassing the record they set in the 2021/22 season.

Only Arsenal, with 14 consecutive wins in two seasons, from March to November 2022, have now recorded a longer winning streak. If Manchester City beat the last club, Bristol City, next Sunday, they will face Arsenal at the Academy Stadium on May 5. London hopes to finish his career and maintain his own record.
