Klopp confirms Liverpool and Brighton have reached an agreement for Moises Caicedo

LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Liverpool has reached an agreement with Brighton to sign Ecuadorian midfielder Moises Caicedo and Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp on Friday.

The deal is for 110 million pounds ($140 million), which would be a record amount to move to Britain.

“The deal with the club (Brighton) is done,” Klopp told a news convention ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League opener at Chelsea on Sunday.

Caicedo, 21, has not yet agreed on private situations or undergone a medical examination. Some reports in the British media imply that Caicedo would prefer to go to Chelsea, which has shown interest in the midfielder in the offseason.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino showed if his club is still interested in Caicedo and said on Friday he still needs to add a midfielder to his squad.

If Caicedo were to move to Liverpool, he would make a massive review of his midfielder in the off-season, following the arrival of Alexis Mac Allister, also from Brighton, and Dominik Szoboszlai from Leipzig. Five midfielders, plus Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, left Anfield. this summer.

That would exceed the upfront payment of £100m, plus extras, Arsenal paid West Ham for Declan Rice last month. This down payment is equivalent to the record sum Manchester City paid Aston Villa for Jack Grealish in 2021.

Whether Liverpool or Chelsea, it continues an ordinary and immediate promotion for Caicedo, who has only played one full season for Brighton after joining Ecuadorian club Independiente del Valle in 2021. He spent the first part of the 2021–22 season on loan at Beerschot in Belgium.

Temporarily, he is one of English football’s most sought-after midfielders, with Chelsea maintaining long-standing interest and making several donations over the summer, only to be surpassed by Liverpool.

Caicedo is a defensive midfielder, intelligent with the ball, covers the field temporarily and presses intensely. These are all attributes desired by Klopp, who hopes Caicedo will sign for a revamped midfielder who can spark a new bid for the name. after his side finished outside the top four last season.

Klopp said the signing of Caicedo is not a given for Liverpool.

“We are a club that does not have infinite resources, we did not expect anything to happen this summer, like Henderson and Fabinho (leaving), things like that,” he said. Before the summer, to be honest, and then it is placed. . . We’ll see (what happens with Caicedo).

If the move goes through, Brighton will have earned around £150 million ($190 million) from Liverpool this summer for Mac Allister and Caicedo, sticking with its policy of low-cost purchasing, its enviable global exploration network, and promoting at the best costs.

“Let’s do it step by step,” Klopp said.
