The Reds were one of 12 clubs, adding six from the Premier League, to sign up for a breakaway league in 2021, but the allocation temporarily collapsed.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said on Friday he was “100 per cent in agreement” with the club rejecting any participation in a revised European league, but added that it was smart for football’s governing body to be “uneasy”.
The Reds were one of 12 clubs, adding six from the Premier League, to sign up for a breakaway league in 2021, but the allocation temporarily collapsed.
On Thursday, the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that UEFA, European soccer’s governing body, had violated EU law by abusing its “dominant position” by trying to prevent the new league from getting off the ground.
The company promoting the Super League used the victory on the pitch to announce plans to hold a new 64-team tournament to compete or upgrade the iconic UEFA Champions League.
Liverpool, however, reiterated on Friday that their Premier League participation had been “halted” and Klopp, speaking ahead of second-placed Liverpool’s home clash with Premier League leaders Arsenal, added: “I agree 100 per cent with 100 per cent. this statement.
“But I’m very happy that, despite everything, we perceive that FIFA (football’s world governing body), UEFA and other bodies can’t do what they want. “
The German coach added: “In the long term we will have to communicate about a lot of things and if we do what they are doing, such as organising more competitions and playing more games, we will not have a say. And what’s going on, I like that they’re a little shaken. “
Earlier, six-time European champions Liverpool responded to the court’s ruling by saying: “Yesterday’s ruling through the European Court of Justice does not replace Liverpool FC’s previous position on a European Super League project. Our participation was interrupted.
“We will continue to work with other clubs through the ECA (European Club Association) and participate in UEFA competitions. “
