Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp doubts that defender Joel Matip and midfielder Jordan Henderson will be compatible in time for the Premier League champions’ season opener against Leeds next month.

Reds captain Henderson has not played since injuring his knee in the win at Brighton on July 8, he has missed the remaining 4 games of the 2019-20 season.

Matip, for his part, suffered a foot injury against Merseyside rivals Everton in his first Premier League restart game in late June, ruling him out for the rest of the campaign.

Both players traveled to Austria with the rest of the Liverpool team for a preseason camp last week, but neither played in friendlies against Stuttgart and Red Bull Salzburg.

They were also absent at Wembley on Saturday, when Klopp’s was beaten by fallout through Arsenal at the Community Shield.

Henderson ruled out england for the League of Nations games against Iceland and Denmark in early September to allow him to concentrate on his fitness.

He and Matip are expected to take part in full education sessions at Liverpool’s Melwood education floor next week, and they are also not sure they are fully compatible until the Reds start defending their name in opposition to newly promoted Leeds at Anfield. September 12.

When asked about Henderson’s imaginable involvement in this game, Klopp told the club’s website: “For that we have to see when he is training.

“I think Joel and Hendo will be part of the team’s education next week and we’ll see. Of course, the longer they have, the greater the chances, but I don’t know yet.”

Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to have compatibility to face Leeds despite not having Community Shield and the Austrian educational camp with an injury.

The 21-year-old has been nominated to participate in an educational consultation on Sunday for those not interested in Saturday’s game at Wembley.

He is then ready to sign up for Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions for his double Nations League title, before returning to Merseyside just 3 days before the start of the new campaign.
