15. END OF PRESS CONFERENCE

HISTORY: Vincent Kompany spoke at a press conference on Monday (August 17) after declaring his retirement from football to take over as Anderlecht’s full-time head coach.

Kompany, 34, who shared first-team tasks with Frank Vercauteren, will be the head coach for the next four seasons.

Kompany joined Anderlecht as a player coach in May last year after spending years with Manchester City of the Premier League.

He left his checkpoint three months later to get into the game.

Anderlecht finished eighth in the Belgian Pro League last season with Kompany making 15 appearances.

Kompany joined Manchester City from Hamburg in 2008 and temporarily as captain of the club, helping them win 4 Premier League titles, two FA Cups and 4 League Cups.

At Monday’s press conference, Kompany sent a message to Manchester City fans after his appearance suffered a 3–1 loss to Olympique Lyonnais in the Champions League quarter-finals on Saturday 15 August. He is under pressure that the club is in good hands with coach Pep Guardiola and that it is only a matter of time before winning his first Champions League title.

Kompany also made 89 appearances for Belgium and a team that finished third in the 2018 World Cup.

Belgian coach Roberto Martinez paid tribute to his former player by describing him as a true leader and inspiration to many generations of players to come.

Kompany will make his full-time coaching debut in Sunday’s league match (August 23) against Mouscron. Anderlecht is third in the standings with 4 problems in two games.
