Lazio move into the last four of Serie A with a comfortable victory over Verona

Looking to end a three-match winless streak, Lazio got off to the best start at the Stadio Marcantonio Bentepassdi, taking advantage of a prime situation to take the lead in the second minute.

Samuel Gigot made his way from the back to meet Mattia Zaccagni’s inswinging corner, sending his glancing header beyond the reach of Lorenzo Montipo.

In their first goal, the visitors momentarily doubled their merits thanks to Boulaye Dia, who moved the ball with his left foot before opting for the back corner to complete a devastating counterattack.

After a disastrous start, Verona came agonizingly close to scoring a goal before the break, only to see Suat Serdar’s header hit the top of the crossbar, ensuring they headed down the tunnel with a two-goal deficit.

As it turned out, Verona’s hopes of a comeback were dashed thanks to one of their former players, Zaccagni, shortly before the hour mark.

Dia took advantage of a back pass and temporarily assisted Zaccagni, who fired a shot close to the post before raising his hands to greet the enthusiasts who idolized him.

Zaccagni’s first league goal since November proved to be his last significant act of the festival, as Marco Baroni made several adjustments to one eye in Thursday’s UEFA Europa League clash against Real Sociedad.

Verona were unable to take advantage of those changes, and in the end an unforgettable outing was summed up when Ondrej Duda received a second yellow card due to a poor tackle.

The Champions League visitors are in the top four, while a fourth defeat in five La Liga games at home leaves Paolo Zanetti’s side in the relegation zone.
