EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) – Third-year supporter Lorenzo Carter made a Lawrence Taylor-style performance on Friday night, scoring at least 3 catches in the New York Giants’ scrum.
The two-hour melee began with the team tying their arms to the center of the box as a videotape made before the day aired on the Scoreboard with the players and owner John Mara calling for equality, unity and social justice. Fans were not allowed to attend the scrum.
“It’s been a tough week,” said quarterback Daniel Jones. “In fact, there’s a lot of excitement and a lot in everyone’s mind. We have an exclusive opportunity as athletes to help replace leadership and lead this movement and this is something we take very seriously as a team and hope to make a difference.”
Carter, who added four and a half catches last season, twice beat first-round recruit Andrew Thomas and Cameron Fleming’s new forehand for the other. One wondered if he had earned a credit for an opposite capture of Jones in the opening game, but it was time and the 10.
“Tonight was no wonder for us,” rookie coach Joe Judge said of Carter. “He’s a guy we’re waiting for a lot and we’re going to put a lot of homework on.”
Carter didn’t need to communicate about the scrum. He said the last two months had been difficult for him and the black community. He said his main purpose and that of the team is to help the country improve.
“I feel like this country is divided,” he said. “We have to use our platform and our voices as blacks and as athletes, everyone who has a voice, not just blacks, not just whites, we all, we have to come as long as we don’t, I can’t think honestly about football.
Offensive runner Wayne Gallman scored in a 43-yard run in the first quarter and landed a five-yard landing of Cooper Rush in the final quarter.
Supporter Blake Martinez, who signed a three-year, $30 million loose agent contract, did not participate in the fray. He did not practice Thursday for an explanation related to the injury why and the opinion ruled that he was not concerned.
NOTE: Darney Holmes, the fourth-round pick in the draft, suffered an un revealed lower body injury, but appeared to be seriously injured. In addition to touchdowns and cashing goals, the scrum allowed issues for a series of three and a wide (3-) and a point for a forced clearing serve. Array.. For the first time on a media-ed occasion, the team wore their names on the back of their shirts.
