Leeds’ hopes were dashed when Edinson Cavani ” completed 8.1 million pounds a year with Benfica’

The Uruguayan striker agreed to sign for the Portuguese national team and will earn 8.1 million pounds a year, according to BeIN Sports correspondent Tancredi Palmeri.

Leeds then sought to signal Cavani to release his pace in the Premier League after winning the championship.

But his dreams seem to have died in the water, as Cavani chose to move after his release by Paris Saint-Germain.

The French champion had announced in the past that his time at the Parc des Princes had passed, along with veteran Thiago Silva, and that he could leave the club for free.

Former Napoli man Cavani is set to collect over £155,000 a week to ply his trade at the Estadio Da Luz.

In the past it was reported that the 33-year-old was about to sign a two-year contract with Benfica.

Chances are, the prospect of Champions League football has tilted things in Benfica’s favour, before a move north with Marcelo Bielsa’s newly promoted Leeds.

Benfica coach Jorge Jesús has shown that of his team in Cavani.

He told Record: “Cavani is another story. He doesn’t want me to follow him, he’s a player who has to have several market opportunities and has to think about options.”

“When we arrived, I didn’t ask him. If you ask me, would I? Who doesn’t? Not just for Benfica, but for Portuguese football.”

Cavani has proved to be one of Europe’s most prolific marksmen over the years.

He has scored 353 goals in 586 games with the club and is also adept on the scene after beating 50 goals in 116 games with his country.

Cavani will look to climb into his already overflowing trophy cup after winning 16 primary trophies at the PSG in the French capital.
