Leicester City return to the Premier League stadium for the opening match of the 2024/25 season against us on Monday evening (20:00 in the United Kingdom) after three consecutive pre-season defeats.
Narrow 1-0 defeats to Italian Serie B side Palermo at Chesterfield on July 26 and to Augsburg in the Bundesliga at the Illerstadion in Kempten on August 3 were followed by a 3-0 setback to RC Lens in France on Saturday, where a 17-shot tally in favor of the Ligue 1 side says it all. However, it should be noted that Leicester lost their last pre-season game last summer 4-0 to Liverpool before cluttering the league name in 2023/24.
New boss Steve Cooper, a former Swansea and Forest manager hired to update Enzo Maresca, who arrived at Chelsea in June, gave his verdict after the defeat: “In terms of performance, there is nothing smart about our ownership game. There’s no doubt that the game required a much more intense ownership game than the one we gave away.
July 20 vs. Villarreal (N) – 2-1 (Vardy, Mavididi) July 23 vs. Shrewsbury (A) 2-1 (Mavididi, McAteer) July 26 vs. Palermo (N) – Aug. 0-13 vs. Augsburg (A) – 0 -110 Aug vs RC Lens (A) – 0-3
Familiar Foxes faces, our former Academy graduate Harry Winks, James Justin, Wilfred Ndidi, Hamza Choudhury, Patson Daka and Fulham newcomer Bobthrough De Cordova-Reid, all undercover against RC Lens. They were joined by summer signings Abdul Fatawu (Sporting) and Caleb Okoli (Atalanta). Facundo Buonanotte, on loan from Brighton, arrived last weekend.
Familiar faces have also moved, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to Chelsea, Kelechi Iheanacho (Sevilla), Harry Souttar (Sheffield United, on loan) and Marc Albrighton, who has been released.
Returning to the KP Stadium for the first time since February 2023, it is worth noting, in terms of form, that Leicester had 17 wins in 23 home games in their good league fortunes last season, with just one draw and five defeats. In the last 23 home games they have conceded 18 goals. Having won thirteen of their first 14 games, Leicester clinched the title with one game left despite a slide of three defeats in their last six.
