They reached the semifinals of the German Cup and broke their three-match streak.
LEIPZIG: Defending champions RB Leipzig beat toothless Borussia Dortmund 2-0 to triumph in the German Cup semifinals on Wednesday and snap their three-game losing streak in all competitions.
Leipzig, desperate to end their recent losing streak, pressed early on and forged a chance after facing a stunned Dortmund side.
The visitors have yet to feel the effects of Saturday’s 4-2 loss to league leaders Bayern Munich and were unable to prevent Leipzig’s first waves of attacks or mount their own offensive challenge.
The hosts’ dominance paid off after 22 minutes when German striker Werner, who had been close earlier, made merits to give Leipzig a deserved lead.
Dortmund briefly tried to come back on the spot, but were lucky enough to concede a goal for the moment when Konrad Laimer escaped in the 78th but failed to beat goalkeeper Gregor Kobel one-on-one.
Even the arrival of Anthony Modeste, a third Dortmund striker, in the 85th minute failed to match Edin Terzic’s looks, with Leipzig goalkeeper Janis Blaswich making a very good stop in stoppage time.
Instead, it was Leipzig who scored at half-time with Willi Orban sealing their victory.
Dortmund have now won just one of their last five games in all competitions, adding a Champions League knockout loss to Chelsea, and have fallen to the Bundesliga position at the moment, two problems Bayern, with 8 games to play.
The Bavarians withdrew from the Cup on Tuesday after a surprise 2-1 home loss to Freiburg, while Eintracht Frankfurt made up with a 2-0 win over Union Berlin.
