Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Mueller scored two goals when Bayern Munich banned their early-season blues with a 4–1 win over little Arminia Bielefeld of the Bundesliga on Saturday after a “crazy” first half.
Hat-trick winner Bayern started the day at the centre of the table after a surprise loss to Hoffenheim last month, but victory in Bielefeld enough to push them to the spot for now.
The champions broke blocks and had an early penalty rejected before Mueller teamed up in the first game within 8 minutes.
Lewandowski doubled the lead a while later, crushing the ball from the edge of the area behind a strong center of Leon Goretzka.
The Polish striker teamed up with Mueller to put the 3-0 before the break, and returned the favor after the break with an exact center to prepare Mueller’s second.
“The first forty-five minutes was crazy, we played very well. We knew the first match after the foreign break would be important,” Lewandowski told Sky.
Japanese winger Ritsu Doan retired one for Bielefeld at half-time, and PSV Eindhoven scored their first Bundesliga goal since arriving in Germany this summer.
However, despite an expired red card for Corentin Tolisso, Bayern had no problems in the final and can now resort to Wednesday’s first Champions League match against Atletico Madrid.
Hansi Flick’s team is now tied for problems with Borussia Dortmund, who took third place, who scored a 1-0 win at Hoffenheim the previous Saturday.
Dortmund, who, as Bayern had already lost a game this season, seemed willing to lose more trouble before Erling Haaland and Marco Reus left the bank at the time to give new life to a brutal performance.
Haaland, 20, leapt forward to put Reus with a tap and win Dortmund’s first home win over Hoffenheim in eight years.
“We’ve been complicated here in recent years. We didn’t have many smart occasions in the first part and we knew we had to create more in the part at the moment,” the striker told Sky.
Haaland rested in the first place after betting three times with Norway in the last two weeks, prompting complaints about the tight foreign agenda.
“In Dortmund we are used to having many weekday matches at this level of the season. The calendar is a little busier this year, so we have to take care of ourselves,” Reus said, after marking the Haaland Square pass in the open to score its first purpose since February.
Dortmund and Bayern are now league leaders by one point, RB Leipzig, who retained the most sensible place with a 2-0 win over Augsburg’s most sensible wonder thieves.
Angelino took Leipzig to the lead at half-time to score his momentum in two games, before Yussuf Poulsen doubled the lead with a volley in the 66 minutes.
“These are the games you want to win if you want to land among the four most sensitive,” Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann told Sky.
On the other hand, Lucas Alario’s headbutt in the first half sealed a 1-0 win for Bayer Leverkusen and prolonged Mainz’s depressing streak, a moment from the bottom, to four losses in four games.
The promoted Stuttgart club continued their start to the season, with Marc-Oliver Kempf and Gonzalo Castro expelling them 2-0 against Hertha Berlin, while Werder Bremen kept Freiburg in a 1–1 draw in the Southwest.
Freiburg took the lead from the start through Philipp Lienhart and had an offside-ruled moment of purpose before Niclas Fuellkrug of Bremen tied from the penalty spot.
At the end of Saturday’s match, Wolfsburg scored a fourth consecutive draw against Borussia Moenchengladbach, while Wout Weghorst scored Jonas Hofmann’s penalty in the second half.
