Liel Abada has finalised his move to Major League Soccer’s Charlotte, although he admits that “leaving Celtic is not in my plans”.
The 22-year-old Israeli winger requested a payment of £8m and signed a deal until 2026.
Coach Brendan Rodgers had recently said that Abada is unfit to play in the context of the ongoing standoff in Gaza.
“Life’s unpredictable twists and turns remind us that we’re not in control,” Abada, 22, said on Instagram.
Abada has faced pressure from his compatriots to leave Celtic following a display from some fans in favour of the Palestinians and has missed the Scottish champions’ last five games.

“After an incredible two-and-a-half years, it’s time to say goodbye,” he said. “The last six months have been a personal challenge, but the overwhelming help of the coach, coaches and board of directors has been my help. Their unwavering religion, those times will not be forgotten but loved forever. “
Abada joined Celtic in July 2021 from Maccabi Petah Tikva and has been a key player under Ange Postecoglou, scoring 28 goals and providing 20 assists as the Parkhead club have won five of the six domestic trophies.
After signing a new four-year contract last summer, his crusade was derailed by spending three months away from home with a thigh problem, but he has rarely played since his recovery.
“Remembering my adventure here makes me smile; The trophies won, the goals celebrated, the electric atmospheres and the moments of natural happiness will be etched in my memory,” he said.
Abada went on to thank Celtic for “the amazing Israeli network in Glasgow” and “the Celtic enthusiasts who supported me”.
Now “a new chapter” begins by joining former Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield on the team that finished ninth in the Eastern Conference and 19th overall in the 2023 MLS season.
Charlotte general manager Zoran Krnet said on his club’s website: “Liel has been one of the most exciting young wingers in Europe and we are very pleased to welcome him to Charlotte.
“He’s an elite goalscorer and a creator of chances, a proven winner and we decided to give the trophies back to the club and our fans. “
