Lionel Messi has admitted that he tried to leave Barcelona to leave Spain after the government investigated him for tax evasion.
Messi and his father were convicted of tax evasion on the source of income from symbolic rights through a Catalan court in 2016 and were sentenced to 21 months in prison, which was replaced by a fine a year later. (FUTBOL NEWS)
Messi has now revealed that the investigation he was contemplating leaving Barcelona to leave the country was so “battered” but believes that other clubs have been discouraged from making official donations because they knew that at the heart it was a singles club type.

“In 2012, 2013 and 2014 I had a hard time,” Messi told RAC1. “Yes, because of the challenge with the Treasury [the Spanish state tax agency]. It was complicated for me and my circle of relatives because other people didn’t know what was going on. They heard things and expressed their opinion. Some of the press did the same, too.
“I think I’m the first [footballer investigated by the Treasury] and for that explanation why everything is so difficult. My kids were young.
“At that moment, honestly, I had the idea to leave. Not because I was looking to leave Barca, but to leave Spain because I felt abused and didn’t need to be here. I had many doors open but never anything official because everyone knew my preference to continue everything that went beyond my emotions towards Barca.”
Questions about Messi’s long career arose in September when he told Sport that he didn’t need to leave the Camp Nou, which he was looking ahead to be part of a “winning team.”
The 32-year-old coach has been warned to refer to the recent champions league frustrations, with Barca’s last win in 2015 and his last two campaigns ending in humiliating defeats against Rome and Liverpool.
However, Messi has made it clear that he needs to finish his Barcelona career and can even convey his dream of betting for the Old Boys of Newell training year club in Argentina before retiring because he needs to uproot his family.
“It’s true that we’ve struggled to start this season, but we have a smart team with wonderful players to win everything,” Messi said.
“We are here to win and win titles. In the last few years, we’ve been close. In the last two years, it’s our fault for the way we were eliminated. It’s not the assignment or the coach. We have a wonderful team to be able to win everything.
“And obviously, if you need me, I’m satisfied [to stay]. I repeat: my concept is to stay here. My concept and the concept of my family is to finish my career here.”
He added that he had “always dreamed” of Newell’s.
“But you have to think more about the circle of relatives than you want, ” said Messi. “Family is the most vital thing.”
Messi also hopes that his former partner Xavi will return to Barca as a coach, even if that happens after his retirement. Xavi is training Al Sadd’s Qatari team lately.
“It’s in education and at some point he’ll come back here,” Messi added. “I have a feeling it will be similar to [Pep] Guardiola. I don’t know if I’m going to delight as a player, of course.”
