A prominent sports lawyer has said Lionel Messi could face a FIFA suspension if he leaves Barcelona without resolving his contractual dispute.
Nick De Marco QC told Sky Sports: “If you end up anywhere, the maximum is probably in the FIFA Dispute Resolution Chamber because Messi, being Argentinian, will apply FIFA regulations and FIFA has its own set of laws and regulations.
“So it is unlikely that it is Spanish law, English law or Swiss law, however, it is the FIFA regulations that apply, and they have a commission that can do those things.
“Ultimately, either party may appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. That’s how these types of disorders are treated.
“One possibility, and it’s not what I’m advising anyone, is for a player to just retire and say, “I’m allowed out, so I’m leaving.”
“The threat to this strategy is that, FIFA generally allows registration to move with the player, if the club then makes a claim and succeeds, not only is the player responsible for [paying] damages, but it is also very likely that he will be expelled under the reign of FIFA for several months and the new club that synthesizes it has an embargo of signings.
“It’s such a dangerous strategy that, unless you’re sure the player is right, it’s not a threat you’d make.
