West Ham striker Michail Antonio suffered an educational injury that is expected to sideline him in January.

The striker, who has been sidelined with a knee problem since Nov. 12, will return to the pitch for Sunday’s FA Cup match against Bristol City, and assistant manager Billy McKinley said Friday he would be assessed after Saturday’s training.

But Antonio missed a consultation at the club’s base at Rush Green before the third-round draw and aggravated the injury.

The initial diagnosis is that he will now be out for more weeks.

The first FA Cup third-round tie of the day (KO 12.45pm GMT) is a hotly-anticipated clash between Sunderland and Newcastle.

There has been much tumult on both sides of the wonderful Northeast athletic department since the last genuine assembly just eight years ago.

The longest era of a Wear-Tyne derby since World War II has been filled with declines, recoveries, acquisitions and reinventions, many of which have been etched for posterity on your favorite streaming service.

There was noise, anguish, joy and adrenaline, but rarely on the same day, that intoxicating and nauseating cocktail of malaise that only local rivalry can serve. It is not easy to say whether life has been better or worse without one of the greatest, the smallest. and the worst games in British football, no one can argue with Sunderland’s dominance.

Unbeaten in nine matches since August 2011, an era that included a six-game winning streak, their pre-eminence is offset by imbalance; After staying awake in 2015-16, thanks in part for the four things that were taken away from Newcastle, who dropped all the way to League One. Now sixth in the Championship, Saturday’s FA Cup third round at the Stadium of Light will pit them against a team (as recently as last month) in the Champions League and, at least in theory, “the richest club in the world”.

Will the stadium shake this weekend?Has the acquisition of 80 per cent of Newcastle through Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) altered the parameters beyond recognition? We try to answer those questions and much more. . .

Crystal Palace fear Michael Olise will miss the remainder of their January fixtures after suffering another hamstring injury.

The prognosis is for the Olise to miss at least another three weeks.

The 22-year-old missed Thursday’s FA Cup third round against Everton and will not feature in the next replay after the 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park. He is expected to miss a Premier League match against Arsenal on January 20 and possibly not turn back time for the home game against Sheffield United 10 days later.

Few new footballers share reviews like Timo Werner, within the same match and rarely within the same phase of play.

Werner’s inventory was at its best when he signed for Chelsea in 2020, having scored 28 goals and assisted 8 more for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, figures that put him in the same numerical category as Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski this season.

His speed and movement seemed to be perfectly suited to the Premier League. But while those attributes were on display in his two years at Stamford Bridge, Werner became known for an incredible run of missed opportunities, perhaps the most productive exemplified through a missed double goal. against Leeds in December of his first season.

It’s no surprise, then, that in his two years in England, Werner has underperformed his expected targets (-8. 26) than any Premier League player in that period.

But the philosophical question remains: is it better to have a player who fills those positions and (sometimes) doesn’t score than to have a more reliable but less chaotic force on the team?

Werner’s move creates acres of space for others, and one has to think that in an Angel Postecoglou team, it may simply be unplayable in a way that football philosophers haven’t yet fully imagined.

And let’s not even say Chelsea were pretty smart when he played for them. They won the Champions League with Timo Werner in the team, but they are unlikely to win it without him for some time.

The 2023-24 season is a season in which Tottenham enthusiasts have embraced chaos. Why bring Werner into the mix?

Unai Emery has admitted it is unclear whether Aston Villa will do so in January, despite injuries and absences ahead of the FA Cup match at Middlesbrough.

Villa remains strict when it comes to Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations, however, there is a sense that Emery needs to do so at right-back, with Matty Cash being the only specialist option lately in the team.

Speaking on Friday, Emery said Villa would only make the sign if he could join the team and that only a few players were willing to leave:

“It’s possible that one or two players will just leave. Maybe. It’s not clear. And if we’re going to sign someone, it’s because we’re convinced they’ll earn us points in the squad. And it’s not certain that we’ll get it in January.

Brazilian legend Mario Zagallo, who won 4 World Cups as a player and coach, has died at the age of 92.

Zagallo won back-to-back tournaments as a player in 1958 and 1962, before led Brazil to glory as a coach in 1970 — becoming the first person to win the World Cup both as a player and a manager.

He was an assistant coach to Carlos Alberto Parreira when Brazil won the 1994 World Cup in the United States.

He also led Brazil to the final in 1998, where they lost to hosts France.

A report by the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) showed in the early hours of Saturday the death of Zagallo, whose president Ednaldo Rodrigues called him “the idol of our football”.

A new year has arrived and Liverpool are in form, top of the table and challenging on four fronts.

Jurgen Klopp’s squad seems well set, but should they be trying to put themselves in an even stronger position now that the transfer window is open?

If there’s one dominance Liverpool could be exposed to, it’s in central defence. Joel Matip’s ACL injury has sidelined him for the remainder of the match and while the club still have four centre-back options, namely Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah, doubts remain.

The Athletic has crunched the data to find possible replacement options for Matip.

A few months ago, Borussia Dortmund looked on with indifference to Jadon Sancho’s problems at Manchester United.

If there is a bit of sadness at his inability to live up to his immense talent, it is offset by a wonderful sense of relief. The Westphalians had fetched the maximum price (€85 million; £74 million; $93 million) for a player who could be inconsistent and had long-standing struggles with punctuality. Liberating one’s own future is no longer their problem.

Senior club officials, speaking to The Athletic on condition of anonymity about their positions, dismissed rumours of the 23-year-old’s return to Signal Iduna Park this winter as fanciful just a few weeks ago. “It’s not going to happen,” one of them said emphatically.

Why, then, this sudden replacement of the center that means Sancho will most likely return this month?

This season’s winter transfer window is now open, clubs can officially release the fight to bring up reinforcements or get rid of players they deem surplus to what is needed.

But while clubs wishing to sign contracted players will have to negotiate and usually pay a transfer fee in a transfer window determined by FIFA, careful planning allows for “pre-contractual arrangements” in certain circumstances.

The Athletic explains what these are and which players due to be out of contract in the summer could now step up transfer plans…

Brighton’s head coach

Ecuadorian left-back Pervis Estupiñan made his first start since late September after suffering muscle injury problems in Tuesday’s 0-0 draw against West Ham United.

“At the moment, the full-back is not a priority,” De Zerbi said. “I think we have other priorities. I don’t like to talk about the transfer market, but we have other priorities, especially if we play tactically in other ways.

“At full-back we can play with Jack (Hinshelwood), Pascal Gross, James Milner. Igor (Julio) played very well there 3 or 4 times. Hopefully we can play with Tariq (Lamptey) again, because Tariq is a vital player. like Joel Veltman. We have more messes in other positions. “

Igor, Lamptey and Veltman are all on Brighton’s long injury list.

Athletic reported on Jan. 1 that Brighton is chasing Boca Juniors left-back Valentin Barco, 19, since the August window.

Ben Davies suffered a suspected hamstring injury during Tottenham Hotspur’s FA Cup win over Burnley on Friday, but head coach Ange Postecoglou said the defender’s absence would have no effect on Eric Dier’s potential departure in January.

Athletic reported on Friday that Bayern Munich are in talks with Dier as one of the centre-back options, with the 29-year-old English player a foreigner in the final six months of his contract with Spurs.

Postecoglou said Dier’s absence from the matchday against Burnley is due to an injury sustained in training and separated from any movement activity.

“He just got injured and didn’t work out yesterday,” the Spurs head coach said of Dier.

When asked about the links with Bayern, Postecoglou replied: “Separate issue, but don’t question my integrity. When I say he’s injured, he’s injured. He didn’t exercise yesterday. I can get you Vision (footage of Spurs drills) for you. “, you can ask. It has nothing to do with anything else.
