Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino praised Cole Palmer’s “incredible talent” after the 21-year-old was named a standout player in tonight’s 6-1 win over Middlesbrough.
Palmer had missed several big chances in Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat against the Championship side in their Carabao Cup semi-final first leg but made up for it with two goals at Stamford Bridge, taking his tally to 13 for the season.
“He’s a player with skill,” Pochettino said. He has the quality and skill to read the game in all its aspects.
“He’s so versatile, can play from the right, as a striker or in behind the striker. He’s very dynamic.
“We try to give him freedom of movement because it’s in this type of game where he can place the most productive position for the team.
“One of his most important characteristics is when we don’t have the ball, in the way that he presses with aggressiveness. He’s a very talented player, still young but doing fantastic for us.”

Fulham are London’s oldest professional club but they have never won a major trophy. Head coach Silva has achieved cup success before, winning competitions in Portugal and Greece with Sporting Lisbon and Olympiakos respectively, but knows the value of a trip to Wembley for Fulham.
“I think it’s a special moment. I’ve played two finals as a coach and I know what that means,” he said.
“Of course, to succeed in a final with a club that has never played a Carabao Cup final at Wembley would be even more special. But they gave us 90 minutes to play and fight and then we’ll see if we have the chance to communicate about the final. “last.
“We have to focus on the semi-final we are playing for. “
Fulham took the lead at Anfield Willian but were overtaken by two quick second-half goals from Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo.

Fulham head coach Marco Silva expects Craven Cottage to witness a “special” event rivalling the club’s highlights when they take on Liverpool in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final on Wednesday.
Fulham, who will be playing in the League Cup quarter-finals for the first time, face an uphill task against the Premier League leaders, who lost the first leg 2-1 at Anfield.
However, Fulham have made comebacks before and none is more notable than their run to the Europa League final in 2010, where Juventus and Hamburg were beaten at Craven Cottage after leading their respective matches.
These fixtures are respected in Fulham folklore and with Wednesday’s match being the club’s most important cup game since the Europa League a decade ago, Silva is aware of how such occasions, for a club of Fulham’s stature, can leave a lasting impression on fans.
“Those moments don’t come and when you get to feel that and play that kind of game, they’re special,” Silva said.
“I know what we’re going to face. Liverpool are the favourites. And even then now that they lead the scoreboard. But we have the ambition.
“You can leave a legacy through results, or what you can build at a club, or trophies. There are several tactics to quit. When you’re at this type of club, in terms of titles, it’s more complicated to do that.
“But if you have a chance to fight for (the cutlery), you’re going to do it. It’s to get a good night’s sleep. It’s not often, however, there have been plenty of smart nights at Craven Cottage, in the cup or in the Europa League.
“It’s all I’ve been hearing for the last two and a half years, about those moments at Craven Cottage. Hopefully we can repeat that tomorrow.

Cole Palmer says what he lost in the first leg of Chelsea’s Carabao Cup semi-final against Middlesbrough was on his mind ahead of tonight’s opposite match.
However, Palmer more than made up for the misses, as his two goals helped Chelsea triumph over a 1-0 away defeat and secure a 6-2 draw on aggregate.
The 21-year-old’s double takes his tally to 13 for the season, including two for Manchester City before his summer move to Chelsea, in what has been a breakout six months.
“I missed three quarterbacks in the first leg, so I had it in my mind to go into that game,” Palmer told Sky Sports. “To score two and go through to Wembley is a wonderful night.
“We haven’t had the most productive start, everyone knows that, we can’t hide it, but now we can try to win a trophy. Going to Wembley will be a wonderful day, a wonderful chance to win a trophy. “And we’re ahead.
Following tonight’s 6-1 victory, Chelsea will play in the Carabao Cup final against either Liverpool or Fulham on Sunday 25 February. Liverpool have a 2-1 lead heading into tomorrow’s second leg.

The Gambia head coach Tom Saintfiet has resigned immediately following his side’s exit at the group stage of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Saintfiet’s side lost 3-2 against Cameroon in an entertaining final group match, which saw several lead changes and positional swaps in the table late on.
But the defeat left Gambia in last place in Group C, with all the problems of their three games already lost to Senegal and Guinea. The Gambia’s preparations for this AFCON were disrupted after its Ivory Coast plane had to make an emergency landing after only nine minutes due to a loss of oxygen, causing a delay in its arrival and bonus-like disruptions.
Saintfiet took charge of The Gambia in 2018 and qualified them for their first-ever AFCON in 2021, where they shocked the tournament and reached the quarter-finals.
The 50-year-old Belgian coached several Africans before accepting the assignment in The Gambia, adding Zimbabwe, Togo and Malawi.

Reading received a suspended three-point penalty after an invasion of the pitch by their supporters; its League One opposed Port Vale to be abandoned.
That match was initially suspended after 16 minutes and then abandoned after Reading fans refused to leave the field at the Select Car Leasing Stadium in protest against its owner, Dai Yongge.
The EFL accused Dai of “bringing Reading and the league into disrepute” and of misconduct “for his repeated mistakes in depositing an amount equivalent to 125 per cent of the club’s expected monthly salary into a designated bank account”. Both rates were referred to an independent commission.
