Liverpool have reached a deal worth up to £27. 5m with Brentford for the transfer of Fabio Carvalho.
Carvalho, 21, joined the Reds in 2022 from Fulham in a deal worth £7million. But despite promising first impressions, adding a late goal against Newcastle in his sixth game for Liverpool, the Portugal under-21 foreigner has struggled to slot into first-team plans.
And despite starting (and impressing) each of Liverpool’s four pre-season friendlies in the United States, Carvalho is set to sign for Brentford in a permanent move before the move window ends as part of a shrewd transfer deal. the Reds.
They are expected to get £22m upfront, with a further £5. 5m in add-ons. The budget generated by the sale of Carvalho is also higher thanks to a 17. 5% resale clause also included in the conditions, which will keep Carvalho at the G-Tech Community Stadium until 2029.
Fulham will make around £5m from the sale to Brentford, and the Cottagers inserted a 20% sale clause into the deal.
Carvalho had an eventful season last year. The Portuguese footballer spent his last crusade outside Merseyside, first with RB Leipzig, where he only started 3 games and controlled just 360 minutes in the first part of the season. He then returned to England, where he was loaned to play-off chasers Hull. City and stood out for Liam Rosenior’s team. But despite nine goals in 20 appearances and some impressive performances, the Tigers failed to make the playoffs.
Liverpool’s new manager Arne Slot has had ample time to assess Carvalho and his long run with the club on the Reds’ pre-season excursion across the Atlantic. The young striker showed promising symptoms and secured a starting position while his senior colleagues were absent, but he was reportedly not considered an integral component of Slot’s plans ahead of the new season.
Carvalho will immediately join Thomas Frank’s squad for pre-season, with the medical due in the coming days after Carvalho reaches his private terms.
The 21-year-old is expected to compete for a spot in the XI with Bryan Mbeumo, Yoane Wissa and Kevin Schade, with doubts still in place about Ivan Toney’s future.
