Liverpool announce departure with sporting director Jorg Schmadtke after Jurgen Klopp bombshell

Following the departure of Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool have announced that manager Jorg Schmadtke will also resign.

The 59-year-old German came out of retirement to update Julian Ward last year and oversaw the signings of Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo in the summer transfer window.

The window has been quieter for Liverpool this month and, once the deal is closed, Schmadtke will share tactics with the club.

“Liverpool is a very special club, so to have had the opportunity to paint here has been a great honour for me, although I knew from the start that it would only be for a short time,” he said.

“I would like to thank everyone (the owners, coach, staff, players and enthusiasts) for what they have given me and wish them all the most productive for the rest of this season. “

The former Cologne, Hanover and Wolfsburg manager had a one-year contract at Anfield, but his early departure will allow the club to continue making plans for the big turnover that will occur at the end of the season when Klopp leaves.

Former Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso has been installed as the bookmakers’ favourite to arrive in the dugout from the summer and whoever takes charge will be working under a fresh face in the directors’ box.

Fenway Sports Group chairman Mike Gordon told Liverpool’s website: “We would like to express our gratitude to Jorg for the role he has played since joining Liverpool last summer.

“He has made a valuable contribution, whether it be supporting Jürgen Klopp or offering assistance and recommendations to our remarkable football operations department.

“In addition to thanking him for his efforts, we also want to take this opportunity to offer Jorg and his family our best wishes for the future. “
