Liverpool ‘Arne Slot’s first signing’ as Michael Edwards gets to work

Liverpool have reportedly met Eintracht Frankfurt centre-back Willian Pacho as Arne Slot’s first signing after Michael Edwards returned to the club last month. The Reds look set to appoint Slot as their new manager, with current manager Jurgen Klopp heading to Anfield. I’ll be leaving this summer after almost nine years on the job.

Edwards spent more than 11 1/2 years at Liverpool and was the club’s sporting director for part of that time. Following Klopp’s decision to end his managerial career at Liverpool, Reds owner Fenway Sports Group convinced Edwards to be his chief football officer.

The 44-year-old now oversees Liverpool’s football operations and plays a leading role in the search for a new manager. He’s also adept on the court, and Pacho seems to have the credentials Edwards is looking for.

Pacho came through Independiente’s academy in Ecuador before joining Royal Antwerp in early 2022. Eintracht paid less than £8m to sign the 22-year-old last summer and gave him a key role in the centre of their defence.

Pacho has played 40 times since arriving in Germany and has started every Bundesliga game for his side this campaign, with his side last sixth in the table. The defender has also won 10 caps for Ecuador and will be part of his country’s national team at the 2022 World Cup. World Cup.

According to movement expert Gianluca Di Marzio, Liverpool are looking for a left-footed centre-back, with Pacho being the club’s priority defensive signing. The player, who helped Royal Antwerp win the Belgian league last season, is said to have the right profile. And it remains to be seen whether the ace is tempted to move to the Premier League.

It had been suggested that Liverpool would appoint Sporting manager Ruben Amorim as their next boss, but they have now turned their attention to the Feyenoord manager Slot. According to Sky Sports, Liverpool and Feyenoord are lately in negotiations over refunding Slot and may be forced to pay £9 million to the Dutch giants to secure the 45-year-old’s services. And it’s possible that Slot and Edwards have a primary rebuild on their hands at Anfield.

Liverpool’s hopes of winning a Premier League title were derailed on Wednesday night when they were beaten 2-0 through Everton at Goodison Park. And with much speculation about the futures of several aging stars such as Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, this summer may mark a line in the sand for a team that has achieved so much under one of its all-time coaches.
