Liverpool dominate player of the year shortlist

LONDON (AP) – Liverpool topped the list of six finalists for England’s football player of the year on Friday, as premier league champions look for a winner for the third consecutive season.

Virgil van Dijk, the central defender who won the award last season, joined the list through teammates Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson and Sadio Mané.Henderson has already been named Football Writers Player of the Year for the 2019–2020 season..

Manchester City players Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling are off the list of finalists for the Professional Footballers Association award.The winner will be announced on Tuesday.

City has never won 4 Premier League titles since 2012.

De Bruyne seems to have a chance to break Liverpool’s streak after scoring thirteen goals and a record 20 assists.

Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah, the 2018–19 player of the year, is only ahead of De Bruyne.Salah has not been nominated this year, nor has Leicester striker Jamie Vardy, the Premier League’s most sensible goalscorer last season with 23 goals.

There is a cast for the women’s award, with 4 Chelsea champions, women’s Super League champions, on the short list: Beth England, Sophie Ingle, Guro Reiten and Ji So-Yun; Arsenal players Vivianne Miedema and Kim Little are the other nominees.
