Lionel Messi won the FIFA Best Awards’ Player of the Year award on Monday night for a record eighth time, and Liverpool duo Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah had the World Cup winner among the most sensible on their list.

The winner is selected through players, managers, media and fans and it is clear that the winner of the 2023 Ballon d’Or will also take home this award.

The Argentine star ran one of the biggest World Cup campaigns in late 2022 for his country to win a third FIFA World Cup and inspired voters, along with his accomplishments with PSG and Inter Miami last year.

Liverpool duo Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah received a vote because they are captains of their country and it is Messi who has the most votes, with Manchester City duo Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne among the three most sensible.

Van Dijk faced Messi at the World Cup and witnessed first-hand the greatness of the Argentine star when he played one of the greatest passes of his career to open the scoring in the quarterfinals against the Netherlands.
