NEWS. . . BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT
Liverpool enthusiasts reportedly introduced a flare into the disabled segment at Old Trafford following their 4-3 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday.
The FA Cup quarter-final clash was also marred by tragic chants, with Greater Manchester police confirming an arrest had already been made.
The incident occurred when Mohamed Salah scored in the first half to give Liverpool a 2-1 lead, the Daily Mail reported.
It was launched from the away fans’ segment and landed underneath them (it landed in the wheelchair segment below), which houses United’s disabled supporters.
Meanwhile, tragic chants were sometimes heard directed at Liverpool fans, and United fans heard chants of “always the victims, it’s never your fault” and “The sun was right: you are murderers” in reference to the Hillsborough disaster.
“GMP can verify that an arrest has been made in relation to the tragic chants that were spoken this afternoon between Manchester United and Liverpool,” a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said.
“Tragic incidents in songwriting will not be tolerated and will be dealt with firmly. We all know enthusiasts who make fun of their conflicting parties in football matches, but they do this with a clever and no offense character.
“Today’s incidents have gone beyond the bounds of what is acceptable and we will work intensively with any of the clubs to identify those responsible for the infractions committed at the event. “
An FA spokesperson added: “We are aware of the tragedy reported today at the FA Cup match between Manchester United and Liverpool and will be communicating and assisting Greater Manchester Police.
“We strongly condemn any offensive, abusive and discriminatory chanting in football stadiums, and we are determined to eliminate this behaviour.
“This is absolutely unacceptable and can have a lasting and detrimental effect on the people and communities within our game. “
