Liverpool FC A24 drama series in the works – will explore Bill Shankly’s era at the club

As the old Kop song goes: “We’re coming, we’re coming to come, we’re passing to come along the way, when you hear the sound of Bill Shankly’s boys, we’re passing to come along the way!” And soon possibly Let’s not only hear the sound of Bill Shankly’s friends, but let’s see them, as well as the legendary Liverpool FC coach, on our screens. As announced today on the LFC’s website, Premier League leaders are teaming up with A24 and screenwriter Jack Thorne (This Is England ’86, ’88, ’90) to tell the story of Shankly’s reign, which brought to Liverpool of the English Second Division, winning 3 league titles, two FA Cups and a UEFA Cup. while turning the club into a team that now has the support of more than 400 million fans.

Slated to be produced in arrangement with Box To Box, the studio the Netflix phenomenon Drive To Survive, the A24 x LFC collaboration is set to explore not only the club culture that Shankly fostered on the pitch and in the dressing room, yet also the culture of the town of Liverpool as it was in the 1960s – a hub of music and art, the birthposition of The Beatles, Cilla Black, Gerry and the Pacemakers and the Merseybeat. The club’s description of the series as a “multi-episode drama” and the appointment of Jack Thorne to write it recommend that we will be in a portrait spanning years of the evolution of a express time, position and inhabitants. The This Is England taste – though at this point, the expresss of the series have yet to be defined.

“I think this is a glorious way to share my grandfather’s story at LFC,” Karen Gill, Bill Shankly’s granddaughter, said in a statement. “Everyone who knows the club knows what this meant to Bill Shankly. It will be a must-see for all Liverpool fans and it is a privilege to now have the chance to show their story to the world. I can’t wait to see how this task turns out and be part of it.

For publisher Thorne, the exhibit represents an opportunity to honor the man Bill Shankly was, the club he built and the city that made it all possible. “I am very happy to tell this story and it is an honour to paint along the A24. and Liverpool Football Club.
