KLOPP’S LAST MEMORY OF THE GAME
After 8 seasons at the club, Joel Matip will leave Liverpool when his contract expires.
The centre-back has been out since December with an ACL injury, so he has been unable to add more games to his total of 201 at Anfield.
Matip, signed by an informal movement in the summer of 2016, temporarily won over enthusiasts and leaves a long list of moments to treasure.
From his adventurous runs from the backline to his help in the Champions League final, Matip will be remembered through Liverpool.
It has been an integral part of Jurgen Klopp’s life, and the manager is a compliment for one of his first signings at the club.
“In all the years I’ve been involved in football, I’m sure I’ve met a lot of players who enjoy it more than Joel Matip,” Klopp told the club’s website.
“I’m not even sure it’s imaginable to say anything bad about him.
“A glorious professional, a glorious footballer and a glorious human being. We’ve been fortunate to have him with us for so long and now all we can do is wish him luck as he takes a new direction. “
Klopp had expressed his preference to see Matip extend his contract this summer, but he leaves having made a valuable contribution, winning every single trophy imaginable to make him one of the most productive single transfers in Premier League history.
The centre-back is the first of three expected breakdown notices, with announcements relating to Thiago and Adrian expected ahead of the final day against Wolves, where they will be part of an emotional farewell.
Following his departure, Matip said: “I’m very grateful for the glorious moments I’ve been able to enjoy with those exclusive people at the club and the enthusiasts who love Liverpool FC.
