As Liverpool’s once-promising season draws to a close, it may be good news for enthusiasts that the club’s behind-the-scenes documentary has yet to be released.
Filming for Liverpool’s addition to an in-development collection of football documentaries began in December and was officially announced in January.
This coincided with the announcement of Jurgen Klopp’s resignation, with the first incredibly positive reception of a documentary series about his final months.
But as the challenge for the four trophies crumbles amid a frustrating showdown (knocked out of the Europa League and FA Cup and to win the Premier League), enthusiasts have called for it to be scrapped entirely.
While it may not possibly happen, Tom Burrows of The Athletic reports that despite ongoing talks with streaming services, no deal has been reached for its broadcast.
Burrows writes, “The show was expected to generate an eight-figure sum for the club, with Disney being the most sensible favorite, but nothing concrete came to fruition. “
It has been reported in the past that Liverpool would ask for around £10 million for the rights to the documentary, produced through Lorton Entertainment.
The plan was announced in August, ahead of the new campaign, with Liverpool’s senior vice president of digital, Drew Crisp, seeing it as “a way to develop their massive global reach”.
Interestingly, Burrows’ report notes that Klopp granted the production “access that they would not have at the start of filming” when they were invited to the dressing room at Wembley for the Carabao Cup celebrations.
However, there have been no such celebrations since, and the timing of the multi-episode docuseries will take an austere note.
Speaking at the series announcement, Klopp told the club’s official website: “As this is my final season, I think we offer a rare opportunity for the audience to gain a deeper insight into what makes this club so special: its people.
“From our enthusiasts to our players and those who paint the scenes so intensely, constantly chasing the success of Liverpool Football Club.
“Through this new documentary series, audiences will be able to see what I see every day at this wonderful club and gain a better understanding of these everyday people. “
