The Dutchman had to be replaced in the first leg of the Reds’ 2–2 draw with Everton on Saturday following a reckless challenge from Toffees goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
Van Dijk underwent scans after adjustment to the extent of his injury, and now it has been shown that the 29-year-old suffered a right knee ligament injury and will need surgery.
“Liverpool FC can verify that Virgil van Dijk will be operated on from the knee injury he suffered in Saturday’s 2–2 draw against Everton,” the club announced on Sunday through its official website.
The central one broke his knee ligaments following an incident involving Blues goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after six minutes at Goodison Park. Van Dijk was replaced and an additional assessment of the injury revealed that an operation would be needed.
“An express timetable has not been set for you to return to action at this stage. After the operation, Van Dijk will start a rehabilitation program with the club’s medical team to allow him to get back in shape as soon as possible. “

The average recovery era after surgery to repair the anterior cruciate ligament is six to 12 months, most likely Van Dijk is offside for the remainder of the Reds’ 2020/21 campaign.
His absence is a heavy blow to Liverpool, as he has played every minute of the last 74 League games for Jurgen Klopp’s outfit, while the club also lacks defensive politics following Dejan Lovren’s march to Zenit St. Petersburg.
That leaves Joe Gomez and Joel Matip alone as identified central defense options, although the club has Rhys Williams, Sepp van den Berg, Nathaniel Phillips and Billy Koumetio waiting for the scenes, while defensive midfielder Fabinho has also played the role in the past.
