Liverpool are still “hopeful” that Trent Alexander-Arnold will sign a new contract at Anfield after rejecting an opening bid from Real Madrid for the defender.
Real Madrid have been rebuffed in their opening move to sign Alexander-Arnold, who is out of contract at the end of the season and free to speak to foreign clubs from January 1.
Liverpool have no interest in promoting Alexander-Arnold in January and will reportedly continue to negotiate with him and his representatives to reach a new deal.
The club insist Alexander-Arnold has expressed no desire to leave.
The Guardian reports that Real Madrid refused “before he can be offered a monetary package to cancel the remainder of his contract. “
It has been reported that Liverpool still retain “hope” that Alexander-Arnold will commit his future to his boyhood club.
Reacting to Real Madrid’s offer, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher posted on social media: “The most important thing for Liverpool in 2025 is to win the Premier League. Neither the contract nor the future stands in the way of this! !
“I like Trent as a child and as a player, but his team would have told Real Madrid to bid and would also have known that Liverpool would refuse. It is to try to protect themselves when he leaves for free.
“Once again, this is something the club and fans do not want with a massive game ahead. “
