Liverpool reportedly have Julio Soler as a possible successor to Andy Robertson. Arne Slot sees the Argentine as a viable option to be Liverpool’s next long-term left-back.
Robertson has been instrumental in Liverpool’s good fortunes over the past six years, but his common injuries are a cause for concern. Last season, he missed 26 games for club and country, adding to a recent setback at Euro 2024.
This led him to be absent from all three matches of the Merseyside club’s pre-season tour of the United States. Kostas Tsimikas, who arrived at Anfield 4 years ago, is Robertson’s deputy at left back.
However, Tsimikas himself has had injury problems and has been informed that he could soon leave in search of guaranteed minutes elsewhere. This led Slot and company to start looking for some other alternative, he said.
The Sun reports that Liverpool have turned their interest to Argentine star Soler, who recently competed at the Paris Olympics. Despite Argentina’s quarter-final elimination against France, Soler managed to make four appearances and impressed.
Liverpool have reportedly already contacted his club Lanus about the 19-year-old talent. Although they face festivals from several major clubs, Soler considers himself an ideal person for Slot’s staff.
If Liverpool were to control to secure Soler, Robertson would still be the left-back of the first selection. However, the long-term plan would be for the Argentine to eventually take on this role.
It is understood that Lanus would be open to a deal of around £13m for the teenager, which is a relative pocket for Liverpool and makes a deal achievable.
With Robertson set for an imminent post-tour return, Slot has signalled the urgency of defensive reinforcements. Fresh from his team’s win over Manchester United on Saturday, the manager expressed his concerns about defensive laxity.

“We are very satisfied with the result, we scored some very clever goals,” he said. “But I don’t think we had enough during the game because United threatened us several times.
“It’s a 3-0 win, but the result may have been different tonight as well. Of course, the effects are what everyone looks at. But the players stayed in good shape and they need to play the way we need to, so [a] game of maximum intensity.
“We’ve noticed some wonderful goals on this tour, some wonderful preparation conditions and I see them running very, very difficult to concede.
“Like I said, today I think we conceded too many chances, United deserved more than a 3-0 defeat. But it is also our quality to mark our own opportunities. We want to work hard over the next two weeks to be in a position for Ipswich. “
