Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro has said there is “no reason” for coach Xabi Alonso to terminate his contract with the club.
Alonso is making waves in his first senior assignment and is on course to lead unbeaten Leverkusen to its first-ever Bundesliga title.
His team led champions Bayern Munich for ten editions and could even add the DFB-Pokal and Europa League crowns in what could be a historic campaign.
They will face Düsseldorf in the semi-finals of the national club festival before taking on West Ham in the last 16 of the Europa League.
As a result, Alonso has been associated with a number of vital moves. Liverpool, who are Jurgen Klopp’s successor, and Bayern have been touted as possible touchdown spots.
Thomas Tuchel will leave the Allianz Arena at the end of the season after agreeing by mutual agreement to end his contract with the club a year early.
Alonso has represented both clubs during his storied playing career, but has so far been coy about his future.
“Maybe they have questions about my future, but I’m sorry, I don’t have anything new to say. I wanted to say it before,” he said at a news conference last month.
“At the moment I’m the coach of Leverkusen. I don’t have anything new to say for the future. We’ll see. It’s normal to have questions, but that’s beside the point now. This is not the time to communicate much about this. “
Despite Alonso’s interest, Carro believes Leverkusen could retain their much-sought-after coach.
“Xabi Alonso has a contract until 2026 and there is no reason to doubt that he will stay here,” he said.
“In football you never know what’s going to happen, but I’m very confident, we have an intelligent relationship. “
