Liverpool verifies Virgil van Dijk asks for surgery

Liverpool have shown that Virgil van Dijk will have surgery for the injury he suffered at the Merseyside derby on Saturday.

The Dutchman suffered a cruciate ligament after the clash with Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

An official on the club’s online page said: “Liverpool FC can verify that Virgil van Dijk will be operated on by saturday’s knee injury in the 2–2 draw against Everton.

“The central one broke his knee ligaments after an incident involving Blues goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after six minutes at Goodison Park.

“After surgery, Van Dijk will start a rehabilitation program with the club’s medical team to allow him to be in the most sensible way as possible. “

No timetable has been set for the 29-year-old’s return, however, it is reportedly unlikely to play a role in the rest of the 2020/21 season.

Liverpool drew 2-2 with Everton in an impressive Merseyside Derby that saw Toffees forward Richarlison sent off.
