Substitutes Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez came off the bench to turn around Liverpool’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg at home to Fulham FC and ensure they would take a 2-1 lead against Craven Cottage.
Both men were replaced early in the second half, with the hosts trailing until Willian’s goal in the 19th minute after a mistake by Virgil van Dijk. Liverpool struggled to recover artistically from the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold, who helped turn around Fulham’s 3-2 lead. in a 4-3 win for the Reds in last month’s Premier League fixture; however, just like at Arsenal in the FA Cup this weekend, Jurgen Klopp’s substitutions altered the game.
Nunez added a directness which had been lacking while Gakpo brought the composure and control to midfield Ryan Gravenberch had not before he was replaced by his Netherlands team-mate. And the pair combined for Gakpo to score in the 71st minute, just three minutes after Curtis Jones’ deflected equaliser.
Liverpool will travel to Craven Cottage for the second leg on January 24. Chelsea suffered a surprise 1-0 loss at Middlesbrough in the first leg of the other semi-final on Tuesday.

If Jurgen Klopp’s traits are removed from his dugout, the Liverpool manager may still look like a master of invention. Three days after the German turned a cup tie against the capital’s warring sides to evoke victory where defeat called him, he did it again. Two substitutions brought two goals in three minutes, some other change resulted in some other change of fortune. The coach considered the match to be a winner. The fact that Arsenal know how he feels is probably not of much consolation to Fulham. At least Marco Silva’s team has a second chance. The challenge they would possibly already be feeling is that Liverpool are the toughest team to eliminate.
Fulham were leading at Anfield, beginning to glimpse their first primary trophy in their 145-year history, when Klopp called up the only two remaining veteran outfield players at his disposal. Once again, Liverpool may be in for a tale of two halves. The tactical adjustments came at half-time at the Emirates Stadium and although Klopp injected his team here with much-needed urgency at half-time, he waited a few minutes before making a double substitution. Nunez, with his penchant for the unpredictable, may be designed for such situations. However, Gakpo has been tasked with filling what is beginning to look like Liverpool’s problematic position: for the second game in a row, Harvey Elliott missed his audition to update Mohamed Salah on the right wing. They pose a risk with the speed and quality of their attackers and can punish you at any time. We were relentless in the first half, but in the second half they drove a bit more.
