Substitutes Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez came off the bench to turn around Liverpool’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg at home to Fulham FC and ensure they would take a 2-1 lead against Craven Cottage.

Both men were replaced early in the second half, with the hosts trailing until Willian’s goal in the 19th minute after a mistake by Virgil van Dijk. Liverpool struggled to recover artistically from the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold, who helped turn around Fulham’s 3-2 lead. in a 4-3 win for the Reds in last month’s Premier League fixture; however, just like at Arsenal in the FA Cup this weekend, Jurgen Klopp’s substitutions altered the game.

Nunez added a directness which had been lacking while Gakpo brought the composure and control to midfield Ryan Gravenberch had not before he was replaced by his Netherlands team-mate. And the pair combined for Gakpo to score in the 71st minute, just three minutes after Curtis Jones’ deflected equaliser.

Liverpool will travel to Craven Cottage for the second leg on January 24. Chelsea suffered a surprise 1-0 loss at Middlesbrough in the first leg of the other semi-final on Tuesday.

If Jurgen Klopp’s traits are removed from his dugout, the Liverpool manager may still look like a master of invention. Three days after the German turned a cup tie against the capital’s warring sides to evoke victory where defeat called him, he did it again. Two substitutions brought two goals in three minutes, some other change resulted in some other change of fortune. The coach considered the match to be a winner. The fact that Arsenal know how he feels is probably not of much consolation to Fulham. At least Marco Silva’s team has a second chance. The challenge they would possibly already be feeling is that Liverpool are the toughest team to eliminate.

Fulham were leading at Anfield, beginning to glimpse their first primary trophy in their 145-year history, when Klopp called up the only two remaining veteran outfield players at his disposal. In 20 minutes, Darwin Nunez had two assists and Cody Gakpo had a winner. Protect your merit at Craven Cottage on January 24 and Wembley awaits, your second Carabao Cup triumph in 3 seasons.

Once again, Liverpool may be in for a tale of two halves. The tactical adjustments came at half-time at the Emirates Stadium and although Klopp injected his team here with much-needed urgency at half-time, he waited a few minutes before making a double substitution. Nunez, with his penchant for the unpredictable, may be designed for such situations. However, Gakpo has been tasked with filling what is beginning to look like Liverpool’s problematic position: for the second game in a row, Harvey Elliott missed his audition to update Mohamed Salah on the right wing. Gakpo came in and stepped in from a flank he rarely occupies to provide the most revealing lineout of the night.

Jurgen Klopp hints at Liverpool escape as Fulham miss opportunity

22:39, Jamie Braidwood

Fulham manager Marco Silva speaking to Sky Sports: “We did very well in the first half, with a smaller block than usual, but we controlled it. They pose a risk with the speed and quality of their attackers and can punish you at any time. We were relentless in the first half, but in the second half they drove a bit more.

“They started to create more problems, we had 10-15 minutes of clever chances and De Cordova-Reid gave us a moment to score. We didn’t take advantage of that moment and missed some demanding situations that we shouldn’t have had. and the shot from the edge of the box deflected.

“We want to be more tactically intelligent and protect our box better for his second goal.

“We’re playing at home, we’re losing 2-1 but we’re going through to go through, that’s for sure. In the second half we had some clever moments and at least we got some other passes, but that’s how he’s at the top of football.

22:20 , Jamie Braidwood

Curtis Jones, speaking to Sky Sports: “In the first half it was difficult, we had the ball complete but we couldn’t find the back of the net and in the second half we replaced him. Fans leave with smiles on their faces. So I’m happy.

“I’ve done my whole adventure in the academy, so it means more. I’ve been with the team since I was 17 and it’s been an adventure of ups and downs. It hasn’t been easy yet. I’ve stayed there, my mentality is good, I know I have the ability and I just want playing time. “

What a brilliant career at Liverpool the 22-year-old is having. Tonight he was named man of the match.

22:14, Jamie Braidwood

That adds up to 14 wins and two for Liverpool at home this season.

Tonight is also the seventh time this season that Liverpool have conceded the first goal and prevailed.

21:57, Jamie Braidwood

Liverpool will take a one goal lead over Craven Cottage for the match on Tuesday 23 January.

Would Fulham have chosen him before kick-off?But given the way Fulham played in the first half and the chances they had to double their lead, I think Marco Silva believes his team missed a great opportunity.

21:53, Jamie Braidwood

Liverpool are coming off the back of facing Fulham to win a dramatic Carabao Cup semi-final first leg!

21:53 , Jamie Braidwood

90 4 minutes: Wilson’s rubbish!Impossible to beat the first defender and Liverpool clear!

21:52, Jamie Braidwood

90 3 minutes: Ooooh. . . Bradley fouls Robinson in the left corner of the box. Fulham throws the boys forward. . .

21:52, Jamie Braidwood

90 2 mins: Liverpool have the ball and seem to be in. It’s almost as if Fulham were still surprised after conceding twice in 3 minutes.

21:49, Jamie Braidwood

90 mins: FOUR minutes to be added on – this has been a breathless second half at Anfield.

21:48 , Jamie Braidwood

88 minutes: WHAT A SAVING!Or a vintage Miss Núñez?Anyway, I don’t know how it stayed. Bradley throws a great cross on his way to Nunez. Nunez does everything he thinks he wants to do, opening his foot and guiding the end towards goal, but Leno stretches out a big leg to deny him.

That can be huge in this semi-final.

21:43, Jamie Braidwood

83 mins: Almost sensational again from Gakpo and Nunez – this Dutchman skips clear and then feeds Nunez with an angled pass. The angle is tight, but Nunez unleashes a fierce shot and Leno has to produce a smart reaction stop to claw it away.

21:39, Jamie Braidwood

79 mins: SAVE! Gakpo and Nunez are at it again! This time the Dutchman swings in a wonderful ball to Nunez, who sends a towering header towards goal. It takes an incredible clawing hand from Leno, underneath his own bar, to keep it out. What a difference those two have made.

21:37, Jamie Braidwood

77 mins: Just after the Gakpo goal, Fulham took off Willian and Pereira and replaced them with Harry Wilson and Tom Cairney.

But just how crucial were those Bobby DeCordova Reid chances? One was just a bad touch, but on the other he had Pereira free in the middle.

Fulham could have quite easily have found themselves 2-0 up.

21:36, Jamie Braidwood

75 minutes: Only 3 minutes between goals from Jones and Gakpo, and this setting has completely changed. Jota fires a low shot over the bar and Fulham hold on.

21:30 , Jamie Braidwood

AN AMAZING RESALE AT ANFIELD!

Fulham have led twice, but now they’re behind!Liverpool’s attack came to life brilliantly as Nunez came to the sword, cut the ball away and Gakpo skilfully shot past Leno from near the post.

Klopp’s replacements change the rules of the game and now Liverpool are in the semi-final!

Liverpool are tied! And he is so ruthless against Fulham. Jones starts from the center of the field and tries his luck from 25 meters with his left foot, and the midfielder gets a great break. His shot deflected off Tosin Adarabioyo’s back and deflected towards Leno, who blocked. Jones didn’t care and without delay returned to the halfway line!

21:26 , Jamie Braidwood

66 mins: HANDBALL?! That’s the cry from the Kop as Robinson misses his header and Mac Allister’s free-kick hits his hand in the box. It was accidental, clumsy and Fulham get away with it, but it’s probably the right decision. VAR may have had other ideas if it was here.

21:23 , Jamie Braidwood

63 mins: And ANOTHER!Good luck to Fulham, return for De Cordova-Reid!After a ball over the Liverpool defense, he shoots from a tight angle as Pereira waits for the touch in the middle.

What a waste of De Cordova-Reid and Fulham can’t leave Liverpool aside!Klopp’s team is very open in defence.

21:21, Jamie Braidwood

61 mins: And speaking of what luck for Fulham! Liverpool’s defence faltered and Willian pounced on the loose ball before betting on De Cordova-Reid, who scored on purpose, but his touch disappointed him and Liverpool recovered.

That won’t go down as a shot, but it’s a huge chance!

21:18, Jamie Braidwood

59 mins: Núñez beats Tosin twice but his cross goes straight to Leno. . . Fulham look very damaging on the counter-attack and there is already plenty of space for the visitors to get in.

21:15, Jamie Braidwood

55 mins: This has been a completely different Liverpool this half – Jota plays a good one-two with Gravenberch but can’t find the room to get his shot away, and when he does Robinson can make the block.

Here are the changes, and it’s Nunez and Gakpo for Elliott and Gravenberch. It’s an attacking move through Klopp.

21:12, Jamie Braidwood

53 minutes: It’s still early in the second half, but the double change comes for Liverpool: Nunez and Gakpo prepare.

21:11, Jamie Braidwood

51 mins: Liverpool keep up the pressure, but Jones’ curling shot is softly saved by Leno. Pereira returns to the ground, holding back, and Liverpool enthusiasts are pleased with the alleged time-wasting tactics.

21:09, Jamie Braidwood

49 mins: ALMOST! Liverpool are knocking on the door now!Elliott recovers the ball well and tries his luck: it is deflected but breaks towards Jota, inside the box!But just as he was about to pull the trigger, Castagne came along and threw in the challenge to save the goal. Great defense.

21:08, Jamie Braidwood

48 mins: CLOSE! Almost an immediate response from Liverpool after half time! It’s great work from Gravenberch, who carries well from midfield and then chops inside Palhinha. The Kop begs for the shot and Gravenberch just drags his wide of the post. Leno was worried.

21:05, Jamie Braidwood

Back at Anfield, it’s the second time Liverpool have trailed at half-time this season, the first time in the Carabao Cup before beating Leicester 3-1.

21:04, Jamie Braidwood

There is fear for Fulham as the half-time whistle blew after Harrison Reed took a knock, but Liverpool goalkeeper Kelleher is still fit to continue.

Liverpool have Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo on the bench, will they be in the second half?

20:50 , Jamie Braidwood

A superb first half from Fulham. They lead at the break.

20:50 , Jamie Braidwood

45 3 mins: CLOSE!Joe Gomez is getting closer and closer to this first Liverpool goal! The full-back tried his luck with a diving volley from about 25 yards that made Leno struggle, but missed just wide of the post.

And that’s it.

20:47 , Jamie Braidwood

45 mins: Van Dijk has fouled Jimenez a few times since he booked earlier in the section and the Liverpool captain wants to be careful. There would be 3 more minutes at the end of that section, but Liverpool didn’t look threatening.

20:45 , Jamie Braidwood

43 mins: Fulham are outworking Liverpool in midfield here, with Reed and Palhinha winning their battles in the middle of the pitch. Pereira tests Kelleher with a long-range shot after a good Fulham spell and on this evidence, Marco Silva’s side want this more than the hosts.

20:41 , Jamie Braidwood

40 mins: Whistles are heard at Anfield every time Leno steps on the ball on goal kicks. Some in the Liverpool stands recommend that the goalkeeper waste time with his team with a goal. However, Fulham made good use of their half-goal lead. The time was approaching. That reaction from Liverpool hasn’t really come yet.

20:39, Jamie Braidwood

38 mins: GOOD LUCK!Or it would have been for Fulham, without Luis Diaz!Great job, once again, from the impressive Robinson to get to the firm and double a clever cross into the box. DeCordova Reid broke loose in the middle, but Diaz came back brilliantly and took the ball at his feet as he blocked the penalty.

20:37 , Jamie Braidwood

36 mins: Leno has to clear a tricky corner off his crossbar before Jota wins a free-kick from the edge of the box, which is roughly the same spot where Alexander-Arnold scored against Fulham in the Premier League this season. . .

This time there’s no Alexander-Arnold, of course, and Mac Allister hits the wall.

20:33, Jamie Braidwood

32 mins: Great play by Bradley to keep the ball alive on the right; it worked until Gravenberch, but he can’t locate Jones, who got lost in the box and would have had a clear view of the goal.

20:31, Jamie Braidwood

29 mins: The game starts to open up well when Fulham counter-attack after a robbery by Jimenez and a clever merit from the referee. Robinson passed to Bradley to head to the touchline, but Liverpool controlled to clear his cross.

20:28, Jamie Braidwood

27 mins: Liverpool have rather lost their way after a decent start and still seem stunned by that Willian goal – Diaz almost finds space to chase onto a through ball, but Tosin gets across well.

20:24 , Jamie Braidwood

22 mins: Liverpool almost counter-attack without delay, but Elliott cuts out Jota’s cross at the far post – the flag is still raised. Van Dijk then booked after grabbing Pereira’s face with a lost hand – it’s difficult for the Liverpool captain as he hasn’t had much contact there.

20:20, Jamie Braidwood

Fulham and Willian stun the Kop who opposes the development of the game!Van Dijk let the ball bounce when he challenged Jimenez and Willian came alive in the corner of the box. The striker writhes and overcomes some demanding situations of weak Liverpool and shoots the ball Kelleher close to the post!

What luck for Fulham, who take the lead in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup!

20:17, Jamie Braidwood

16 minutes: GOOD LUCK! Great paints from Mac Allister to sneak in and collect the ball from Palhinha (which is twice his size) – from there Gravenberch helps him over Jota and the striker tries his luck from the angle. He didn’t get the softest shot and it went wide of Leno’s far post.

20:15, Jamie Braidwood

13 mins: Fulham started this game sitting deep and aren’t offering much when given the chance to win the ball back so far. That said, Marco Silva would probably pass on his hand to return to Craven Cottage.

20:11, Jamie Braidwood

10 mins: Another half-chance for Liverpool, who are finding early gaps in the Fulham defence. This time Jota is able to run with the ball into the room on the left of the Liverpool attack but his final ball is a waste with good options in the box.

20:09, Jamie Braidwood

8 minutes: The first few days, but it was a smart start by Conor Bradley. Elliott selects him after a great run for Fulham left-back Robinson; Bradley tries to take him away, but no one is there. and Leno manages to win the ball back.

20:07 , Jamie Braidwood

6 minutes: GOOD LUCK! First real action of the match, and it’s almost a crisis for Tosin Adarabioyo: the Fulham defender passes directly to Gravenberch and Jones has the chance to run towards goal. Fulham fell back but Jones fired straight at Leno.

20:04 , Jamie Braidwood

3 mins: A low-key start at Anfield, with some boos from the outside for Harvey Elliott, who I think left Fulham for Liverpool when he was 15.

Jürgen Klopp on Conor Bradley: “A very sensible boy. We knew we wanted to use it. Of course, we accept him as faithful. I like the team and we know what’s at stake. We know what that means for Fulham, so we want to be sure what it means for us as well.

“We played recently against Fulham and it was a wild one. It’s a tough one.”

19:54, Jamie Braidwood

Will it be Liverpool or Fulham who will dream of Wembley tonight? It’s a back-and-forth game, but the latter is within reach. . .

When is the Carabao Cup Final?

19:41, Jamie Braidwood

Marco Silva on Fulham’s ‘dream’: “It’s going to be an extraordinary stage for this football club. It’s transparent for us, it’s a dream and for our fans we like that they can dream, which means we’re doing anything. “Not bad.

“For me, it’s much more of an ambition than a dream. For me, it’s a purpose because we’ve worked hard to get there and we have to take the next step, bet on Liverpool and get to the final.

“That’s the ambition (to reach the final). We’re going to play and the quality of Liverpool and the huge challenge we have ahead of us. From the moment we beat Tottenham in the second round, we’ve been very serious in our approach. .

“If you get to this level (semi-final), you’ll win more and you’ll have the ambition to be at Wembley. “

Liverpool will be Mohamed Salah tonight when his Egyptian side face Mozambique in their opener on Sunday.

19:15, Jamie Braidwood

Joe Gomez, who makes his 200th appearance for Liverpool tonight, insists the Reds will not be dazed by the prospect of a potential quadruple fixture but said there is a desire in the team to achieve it this season.

“We all have preferences and we need to make the most of the season,” he said. “The only thing we can do is take it game by game. I know it’s a cliché, but there’s a preference and we have a platform to build on.

“We can’t take that for granted, as we know with last season it’s not always plain-sailing and we went through rough patches but we built from it and learnt from it. So, we have to keep at it and see where it takes us.”

Team News!

Liverpool host Fulham tonight in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final. The Premier League leaders are chasing 4 trophies this season and will be hoping that the Carabao Cup will be the first of them. Marco Silva’s team is shaping up to be a challenging opponent. and will look to make life more difficult for the Reds ahead of the second leg at Craven Cottage later this month.

Jurgen Klopp is without several key players as Liverpool continue to battle on fronts, with the news that influential vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to be out for at least 3 weeks, adding to the absences of Mohamed Salah and Wataru Endo. while participating in the Africa Cup of Nations and the Asian Cup respectively.

The Liverpool manager could therefore be forced to reshuffle his squad after Sunday’s 2-0 win over Arsenal in the third round of the FA Cup, while Fulham will be close to completing their strength as the Cottagers aim for their first primary. Fulham have not played in a primary final since their UEFA Cup defeat to Juventus in 2009, but now dream of Wembley, with Middlesbrough beating Chelsea in the first leg of the other semi-final at Riverside last night.
