Liverpool vs Southampton ratings as Mohamed Salah saves trio 5/10 in win

Mohamed Salah scored a brace as Liverpool secured a big win to beat Southampton 3-2 on Sunday and move eight points to the top of the Premier League table.

Arne Slot’s side took the lead through Dominik Szoboszlai’s curler after a mistake from the Saints but Adam Armstrong drew the home side level before half-time. He scored a rebound after Caoimhin Kelleher had saved his initial penalty.

Poor defending against a Southampton counter-attack allowed Mateus Fernandes to make it 2-1 on 56 minutes. But Mohamed Salah was the man to count on again as he profited from an Alex McCarthy mistake to pull the Reds level.

And after Yukinari Sugawara scored in his own box, Salah conceded a penalty to give away three important points that fuel Liverpool’s hopes of winning the Premier League title this season.

Express Sport evaluates and lists Liverpool after their victory. . .

Caoimhin Kelleher – 7

Reliable again. He made a clever save from Flynn Downes in the first half and saved Armstrong’s penalty, but was unlucky to have the rebound fall to the striker.

Conor Bradley – 6

He showed a clever bond with Salah in the overlay. However, he is to blame for poor protection in Mateus Fernandes’ goal, in which he and his teammates were trapped looking for the ball. To a large extent it was forged at the entrance. Reserved.

Ibrahima Konate – 5

He survived an early but lackluster penalty in a first half in which he gave the ball away profitably on several occasions. He was booked for a clumsy foul on Paul Onuachu with whom he had a difficult battle. The best part of the moment.

Virgil van Dijk – 6

He lost the ball unnecessarily before Southampton’s penalty, but stepped up in the moment to help Liverpool press. He won the ball unusually high up in the box in a matter of moments.

Andy Robertson – 5

He was complex, but at times his deliveries were disappointing. Tyler Dibbling committed a penalty foul even though the foul appeared to be outside the area. He went out at the far post for a late chance and was lucky to have Konate deal with Sugawara.

Curtis Jones – 7

Pressed well for the opening goal to force Southampton to give up possession and completed every single one of his 56 passes though not as much of a creative influence compared to previous outings. Subbed off early.

Ryan Gravenberch – 7

Good on the ball, but rarely mediocre against Southampton’s counterattack. It was his ball that created confusion during Salah’s equalizer, but he missed a smart chance to make it 3-2. It was the guy who played the first pass that led to a chance for Liverpool.

Mohamed Salah – 8

Had three shots in the first half but was otherwise kept quiet by the home team. It looked the same story second half until he made the most of McCarthy’s mistake and scored the penalty to win the game. Was only denied his hat-trick by the inside of the post. Booked for taking his shirt off.

Dominik Szoboszlai – 7

He pressed brilliantly and implemented a nice curling finish for the first goal. He put Salah on purpose to make it 4-2, but the Egyptian curled over the crossbar. I deserve to have done more in the challenge after Dibling for the goal that made it 2-1 at Southampton, but still better than some of his recent games.

Cody Gakpo – 6

Some clever crosses in the first half, adding a very clever ball for an early chance from Salah, but the quality of those deliveries diminished in the second half. Perhaps it is a shame to have been addicted. Reserved.

Darwin Núñez – 5

Barely involved first half aside from an off-ball tussle with Jack Stephens. Livened up second half and nearly had an assist with a low cross for Luis Diaz but too often his passes were slightly astray or his positioning wasn’t quite right, as evidenced by one late counter when he ran offside.

Luis Díaz – 7

I made it 2-2 less than a minute after coming on, but I completely missed the ball. He forced a very good save from McCarthy with a header from a corner and gave power to the Liverpool attack.

Alexis MacAllister – 6

He hit one just over the crossbar and helped Liverpool delay the game.
