LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini leaves the program

LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini left the show after a difficult season in which the Tigers allowed six warplanes to gain more than 500 yards.

In a statement via LSU on Monday, Pelini said he and head coach Ed Orgeron “had agreed it was better” to compose forms.

“I am grateful to call Coach O a friend and I am grateful for the opportunity to return to LSU, but I have to continue my coaching career,” added Pelini.

Pelini, hired after Dave Aranda left the Tigers in the hands of Baylor’s head coach, signed a four-year, $9 million contract with LSU. He would still be owed approximately $7 million under his agreement, but LSU said Pelini had agreed to leave with – payment of time that had not yet been disclosed.

Pelini was at the time as defensive coordinator of LSU, having served in the same role under Les Miles when the Tigers won a national name in the 2007 season. Pelini left LSU for Nebraska head coach in 2008 and was youngstown State’s head coach for five seasons before returning to LSU.

This year, he inherited a decimated defense through the 2020 NFL Draft and upcoming retirements due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

LSU was forced to play with many freshmen and other in-experience players, and canopy failures were frequent, and rival players were running in search of big prizes.

LSU allowed five warplanes to score more than 40 points, with a 44-34 loss to Mississippi State, the season’s opening, in which the Bulldogs passed for 623 yards.

LSU allowed 650 total yards in a 55-17 loss to Alabama on December 5.

However, the defense has shown an improvement in 4 of the last five games, adding up to 3 wins through LSU. Tiger defense allowed landing in a loss to Texas A

“I am proud of the strength with which our team competed all the way, the way our guys advanced and evolved and the general direction we were taking,” said Pelini.
