Lyon wins the women’s champions league title in a row

SAN SEBASTI-N, Spain – Lyon extended its European dominance by beating Wolfsburg 3–1 to earn their fifth consecutive name of the Women’s Champions League on Sunday.

Eugenie Le Sommer, Saki Kumagai and Sara Bjork Gunnarsd-ttir scored for Lyon by winning a seventh Champions League trophy.

Wolfsburg, seeking its third title after back-to-back triumphs in 2013 and 2014, got on the board with Alex Popp after its French rival had opened a two-goal lead in the first half.

Wolfsburg also lost the maximum against Lyon in 2016 and 2018.

Sommer opened the scoring in the 25th minute before Kumagai took a short lead before the break.

Gunnarsd-ttir sealed the victory at 88 after Popp put Wolfsburg on the scoreboard at 58.

“We have played a wonderful season, we can be proud and I can be proud to be a member of this team,” said Popp.

Lyonnaises Le Sommer, Wendie Renard and Sarah Bouhaddi won their seventh European title, taking them one step ahead of the men’s record held by Paco Gento.

“It’s really quite difficult that we have achieved our fifth title directly, to be honest,” said Bouhaddi. “We are literally proud of ourselves, it was a very tough competition.”

It is the fourth last between the two clubs and the third in the last five years. Wolfsburg’s only win over Lyon came in the first final between the groups in 2013.

It is Wolfsburg’s first defeat in 41 games, since the home’s 4-2 defeat in the Champions League quarter-finals against Lyon in March 2019. Lyon have yet to lose a competitive setting since the final. of the French Cup against Paris Saint-Germain in May 2018.

In the semifinal of the 8th mini-tournament played by the fans in northern Spain, Lyon beat PSG and Wolfsburg beat Barcelona.

The final one took place at the Anoeta de la Real Sociedad stadium in the Basque town of San Sebastián. Athletic Bilbao’s San Mamés stadium has also hosted matches.
