Maguire retired from England team after conviction

Harry Maguire withdrew from the England squad for their Nations League matches against Iceland and Denmark after the Manchester United captain received a suspended criminal sentence following a fight in Greece.

Maguire punished after being convicted of annoying assault, resisting arrest and repeated bribery attempts.

The 27-year-old defender plans to appeal the verdict, but England coach Gareth Southgate has decided to remove him from the squad for September games hours after naming him to the squad.

“Taking into account the events of tonight, I can verify that I have withdrawn Harry Maguire from the England team for the matches opposite Iceland and Denmark,” Southgate said on the FA website.
