Harry Maguire soon won the captain’s armband at Manchester United.
Signed for 80 million pounds in August 2019, the central defender was officially named captain in January 2020, having already worn the bracelet several times during the first part of the 2019/20 season.
“He came here and is a leader in the group,” Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said at the time, on United’s website.
“I’m not surprised, but I was inspired by his leadership skills, so Harry will continue to wear the bracelet. “
Nine months later, Maguire’s leadership skills are now being called to follow difficult times on and off the field.
Some United supporters sought to get rid of him as captain after being arrested on the Greek island of Mykonos this summer.
And Maguire’s performances at the start of the 2020/21 season have been heavily criticized, his efforts in United’s humiliating 6–1 loss to Tottenham on Sunday.
A moment that sparked the wrath of club enthusiasts came here when the 27-year-old failed Marcus Rashford after United striker protested the early expulsion of Anthony Martial.
Ranking of Man Utd captains in the PL era
This led us to Maguire’s position on United’s captaincy list at the time of the Premier League.
Track: very high.
10. Harry Maguire (2020–present)
Yes, that’s right. He’s the worst of them all.
As you can see, some of United’s captains did a lot by dressing up with the bracelet.
But none of them as deastrous as Maguire.
His arrest was a disgrace to him and the club, and he failed to fulfill as enthusiasts would expect from a player valued at 80 million pounds.
9. Ashley Young (2019-2020)
Young named captain after a disappointing 2018/19 season, much to the frustration of United fans.
He had even been booed in the preseason, before Solskjaer proved he was the club’s new captain.
The side was an unpopular selection for the bracelet and his resolve to leave for Inter Milan in January 2020 shows that it was never a wonderful match.
8. Antonio Valencia (2018-2019)
Valencia had reveled in the past with the bracelet, putting him up for the 2017 Europa League win over Ajax, and was named captain through José Mourinho at the start of the 2018/19 campaign.
But the Ecuadorian struggled to have compatibility and made nine appearances in all competitions before being released at the end of the season.
7. Michael Carrick (2017-2018)
Carrick would not be so low if we were to consider all his paintings at United, however, the ratings are based on the player’s time as captain.
And Carrick has made only five appearances in charge, with the midfielder suffering with fitness in 2017/18, however, he acted as an off-field leader.
6. Eric Cantona (1996-1997)
The enigmatic Frenchman named captain for the 1996/97 season and, a success, joined in winning the Premier League title.
It was a difficult selection by Sir Alex Ferguson, as Cantona may not be used to set an example, but he was an inspiring figure and made sure his last season at the club was memorable.
5. Wayne Rooney (2014-2017)
Rooney named the boss through Louis van Gaal and won the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League with the bracelet.
Van Gaal cited Rooney’s “professionalism and attitude in training” when he chose his new captain, and winning three trophies in some of United’s average groups was a respectable achievement.
4. Nemanja Vidic (2011-2014)
Serbian defender Nemanja Vidic took over as captain following the retirement of Gary Neville and two Premier League titles in three seasons.
“You have to think about your everyday jobs: your behavior, the way you play, the way you train,” Vidic said of the role, through the Guardian. “I know I have to set an example on and off the field. “
Vidic, a perfect captain, disappointed some enthusiasts when he signed a pre-contract deal with Inter Milan midway through the 2013/14 season.
3. Steve Bruce (1994-1996)
Bruce had the unviable task of filling in Bryan Robson’s screens after the midfielder left in 1994, but did a job.
The center was a leader and guided United to a league double and FA Cup in 1995–96.
2. Gary Neville (2005-2011)
The boy succeeded Roy Keane as United captain in 2005 and ended up with him for six years.
The trophies continued to arrive, United won two Premier League titles, two League Cups and the Champions League while Neville was the captain, although he shared the armband with Ryan Giggs in his later years at the club.
Neville began to have doubts about his fitness for the role when he realized he could not play at the highest level, but Ferguson kept him because he appreciated the leadership of the right-back.
“Me and Giggsy kept it for three or four years beyond that just because of the camaraderie in the locker room,” Neville told Sky Sports’ The Football Show in April.
“We were the cops, if you will, the older statesmen. Sir Alex sought to make sure the team got there first. Even though I felt unworthy as captain right now. “
1. Roy Keane (1997-2005)
Getting to number 1 is, of course, Keane.
What Man United would give to have a player as passionate and engaged as the Irishman right now.
Ferguson’s lieutenant on the field, making sure United was England’s most feared team at the turn of the millennium.
Not only is he a warrior, but he is also an elegant footballer.
His demonstration in the semi-final of the 1999 Champions League against the iconic Juventus. Keane trained United to the last knowing that a suspension would rule him out of his match with Bayern Munich.
In 8 years as captain, Keane has won four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and the Champions League.
It’s an exemplary pattern.
