Manchester United is reportedly focusing on golf courses as potential sites for a new world-class education centre.
Carrington, once one of the most productive educational complexes in the country, no longer has as much respect and reputation, thanks to years of neglect and lack of modernization of infrastructure through the Glazers.
During the takeover process before Sir Jim Ratcliffe struck a deal with the Glazers for a partial 25% investment into United, a revamp of Carrington and Old Trafford was one of the main issues of contention.
Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al-Thani had pledged to adopt a complete overhaul of the two sites. Ratcliffe has also pledged to spend £250 million on modifications that would possibly be needed to repair Old Trafford.
According to Mike Keegan of the Daily Mail, plans are already underway to design and build a new floor for United.
“Mail Sport understands that club officials, with area constraints on the Premier League giants’ existing base, have focused on courses in south Manchester and have even had initial talks with a golf club. “
“All the features are still on the table, but United’s view is that moving out of Carrington, where they have been located since 1999, can give them the most productive option to create a world-leading facility. It is understood that any site comes with at least one hundred acres of buildable land to approximate United’s requirements.
United acknowledge that, at the moment, Carrington are unfit for the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City.
Not only is Carrington at capacity, but it also lacks parking spaces. The feeling is that getting large tracts of land is the most productive option.
Keegan added: “It can be revealed that talks have been initiated with High Legh Park Golf Club but no agreement has been reached. A wooded pitch in Knutsford that ticked a lot of boxes, especially as it was close to where many United players live.
It is believed that the scenario is still “fluid” and that nothing is ruled out.
An option is to build a new training ground and keep both Carrington and former training base, the Cliff. This would see United spread out sessions across multiple locations. For instance, the youth and women’s teams could remain at Carrington while the men’s set-up would train elsewhere.
The Mail stresses, however, that the desired option is to bring all the groups together in one central place.
This ambitious project is being overseen by United’s chief operating officer Collette Roche. She brought in Mags Mernagh, from Leicester City, to help her.
Mernagh designed the well-known 185-acre Foxes Educational Course, also built on a former golf course.
Reached via The Mail for comment, United declined to comment.
It’s not clear who will foot the cost of this project if indeed it comes to materialize.
