Manchester United have no excuse not to employ a central defender in the window of summer plays, as they had characteristics that would have allowed them to avoid overspending. That’s the opinion of ESPN specialist Gab Marcotti.
United has signed offensive reinforcements this summer despite their consecutive problems.
Fans and experts expected them to face their daily defensive work after a poor start to the season, scoring 11 goals in just 3 games.
However, instead of calling a new central defender, they targeted the top of the field, hiring Donny van de Beek, Edinson Cavani, Amad Traoré and Facundo Pellistri in the attack position.
While United paid for left-back Alex Telles, buying Brazilian From Porto as part of an 18 million-pound deal, he opted to sign a central defender while Chris Smalling left the club after ten years to permanently sign for AS Roma.

And Marcotti thinks the explanation for why they didn’t it was because they didn’t have to pay too much.
RB Leipzig ace Dayot Upamecano connected to a move, but United would have had to pay more than 59 million pounds to signal it.
But the ESPN specialist thinks they still had less expensive features at their disposal and didn’t have to spend much on their rotation functions.
Chelsea have caught two centre-backs at opposite ends of their careers paying move-in fees for any of them, with Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr coming from Ligue 1.
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, criticized for Tottenham’s caution in the play claim, Arsenal suggested handing over forty-five million pounds to Thomas Partey, while the acclaimed star in Mikel Arteta claims man Utd has issued a play-by-play admonition from Edinson Cavani because the star is undignified and will play anytime soon’
And speaking to ESPN FC, Marcotti admitted that United would have liked to recruit more with the ability to play central defender than to do nothing in the market.
“I guess it’s because they didn’t need to be taken for a walk and didn’t need to spend too much,” he said when asked his opinion on why the Red Devils didn’t take the job.
“That’s the explanation we get when United is asked about it.
“I don’t know, and I’ve been saying this for weeks, if you can’t locate the guy you’re looking for . . . someone told me that if you don’t get the most sensitive fruit out of the fruit at the back of the tree, because you still have to eat.

“When I look at this now that Chris Smalling is gone, I look at United’s features in the center of my back and the fact that the window is no longer open, it can be only 3 very long months for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
“I sense, I sense that they didn’t need to spend too much for Upamecan or more and they were looking to wait for their time.
“But if you can’t get that [best player], head over to a veteran, a guy who knows his way.
‘There were so many guys out there who could get for short-term loans or offers, like Cavani, just to have an attractive framework, so their first choice from the bank wasn’t Eric Bailly or Phil Jones, or Axel Tuanzebe and the boys like it.
