Manchester City Five Wolves 1 – Report

A hat-trick from Erling Haaland in the first half against the lowly Wolves, who suffered their third defeat in 4 games.

The striker scored an early penalty to give Manchester City the lead, before going home hard to give the hosts control.

A second penalty before half-time saw Haaland score his second hat-trick in two seasons against Wolves, ending a disastrous first half for the visitors.

Hwang Hee-chan scored just 8 minutes in the second half to give Wolves hope, but City responded in less than a minute when Haaland scored a glorious fourth.

Julian Alvarez added a fifth delay in the game to add insult to Wolves’ injury.

Gary O’Neil replaced the team that beat Luton last week, keeping the 5-3-2 formation.

Hugo Bueno replaced Matt Doherty, while Rayan Ait-Nouri moved to right-back.

Santi Bueno and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde were on the bench following their return from injury, while Pedro Neto was not included.

The hosts found some space early on and could have scored when Haaland found Kevin De Bruyne in the box, but a clever intervention from Nelson Semedo kept Wolves going.

However, the visitors had some space on the counter-attack and Matheus Cunha had a wonderful chance to lose Bueno, but he dropped back and played too much before missing the chance.

Wolves had a mountain to climb after 12 minutes when City took the lead. A naïve challenge at the Ait-Nouri corner got Josko Gvardiol into the box and referee Craig Pawson pointed to the spot, allowing Haaland to interfere and send in Jose Sa. form.

City were in the lead and a superb save from Sa denied Haaland a goal after heading in Bernardo Silva’s cross.

Once Wolves weathered the storm, they moved the ball around more and located space in the attacking areas.

But they conceded a moment in the 35th minute and it was entirely Wolves’ fault. Hwang picked up the ball in midfield and discovered Matheus Cunha, but the striker profitably gave the ball away and City introduced an attack that saw Rodri cross the post and set it in. Haaland to go home.

Just before half-time, Haaland scored the goal and went down in the box to a tackle by Semedo, but referee Pawson did not call a foul. However, VAR asked him to check the pitch monitor, as Semedo had hit the striker with his left-footed shot and awarded penalty, which Haaland sent in for a hat-trick in the first half.

The intervention of VAR prompted the travelling fans to chant the generation that is ruining football.

Gvardiol came close to making it 4-0 just before the break, but Wolves survived the scare after a disastrous first half.

When the teams came out for the second half, Bellegarde replaced Mario Lemina, meaning Wolves switched to a 5-2-3 formation.

Phil Foden came close to scoring when he directed a shot towards the far post, but Sa was well placed to get around the post.

The Wolves got back into the game in the 53rd minute when a cross from Bellegarde saw Ederson put his fingers on it, before a clean first goal from Hwang gave the visitors a lifeline.

But just a minute later, City regained their three-goal lead, when Haaland scored his fourth. Ederson fed Foden, who discovered the striker as he cut through Max Kilman and fired a superb shot into the corner.

The Norwegian striker surely beat Wolves and almost scored the fifth when he pulled away from Kilman again, but his attempt was cancelled out by Sa.

Then, Mateo Kovacic forced Sa to make a clever save.

Pablo Sarabia had a great chance at the post but missed the ball that crashed.
