Dubai: Pep Guardiola has signed a two-year contract extension to put an end to hypotheses about his long career at Manchester City. Guardiola was due to be out of contract at the end of this season and it had been reported that the Spaniard could be in a position to leave City. But the 49-year-old now agreed to remain at Etihad Stadium until at least 2023.
“Manchester City are pleased to announce that Pep Guardiola has signed a new two-year contract with the club,” he said on the City website.
The news may be the last piece of the puzzle for City to make a move now for the volatile Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi. City connected with the Argentine in the summer play window and Messi demanded a move after publicly pointing out Barca’s control after an 8–2 humiliation through Bayern Munich in the Champions League. However, a loophole prevented Messi from circumventing an extorted termination clause and forced him to remain in the Catalan club contrary to his will.
However, he will be a loose agent in the summer window of 2021 and said he would be in a position to move to Etihad if Guardiola and Argentine striker Sergio Aguero were still on the payroll upon arrival.
