Manchester City won the odd trophy. This has been inevitable given the superiority of Pep Guardiola’s team over almost every other team last season. City have won three times and won the elusive Champions League for the first time. They entered the UEFA Super Cup as big favourites. But he needed consequences to accomplish the task.
Sevilla struck first. They were the most important aspect in the first forty-five minutes, as City failed to maintain the speed of the game. Youssef En-Nesyri jumped on Nathan Ake to receive a cross from Marcos Acuña and greet the Spaniards in the lead. That goal took them into half-time with an advantage, but it woke up City.
Guardiola’s men continued in the second half and equalised Cole Palmer. Like En-Nesyri, he scored a good header and equalised for City. The match ended in the penalty shootout and the Champions League winners were perfect. They scored all five before Nemanja Gudelj missed his penalty kick and handed them the trophy.
Relive when Manchester City beat Sevilla in the Super Cup:
Ivan Rakitic arrives at Sevilla. Nobody has missed the ball and Rakitic continues that momentum with a dazzling penalty in the left net.
Mateo Kovacic intervenes in City. He sends the goalkeeper in that direction and inserts him in the lower left corner.
Rafa Mir has touched the ball since his arrival on the pitch. This is visual because it goes to the same position as Alvarez and makes him explode.
Argentina’s Julian Alvarez has the next shot. He throws it into the right corner!Good penalty.
Lucas Ocampos was Sevilla’s most productive player tonight and, rightly, he went ahead to take the first penalty. He runs to the ball and rolls it to Ederson’s left after the goalkeeper jumps in the way.
Manchester City takes the first shot and it will be Erling Haaland who moves first.
Haaland has Bono to beat. . . He gets it! The people are taking the lead.
90 min: It’s the penalties!
The 2023 Super Cup will be played on penalties. Sevilla went ahead in the first half, Youssef En-Nesyri, but Manchester City picked up speed and found the equalizer, Cole Palmer, in the second half.
Sevilla, however, managed to keep City at bay and force the Super Cup on penalties.
90 2 minutes: Sevilla take a little more playing time with Suso and Rafa Mir on the pitch to upgrade Erik Lamela and Youssef En-Nesyri.
Will the Europa League champions take Manchester City to penalties?
90 minutes: Juanlu catches Josko Gvardiol on the left side of the pitch. City won a free-kick in a dangerous area and Phil Foden sent the second goal.
Nathan Ake sneaks around the ball and directs the ball into the goal for Bono to pass the ball over the crossbar!
Four minutes of additional time to play.
87 minutes: Julian Alvarez, however, makes his appearance and replaces Cole Palmer, who was Manchester City’s most productive attacking player tonight.
It will give Pep Guardiola something to think about ahead of the next Premier League game.
