Newcastle struck twice in the first 20 minutes as the hosts got it all wrong without suspended Manuel Ugarte and Bruno Fernandes.
More – Ruben Amorim after the match
Newcastle go fifth with 32 points, 10 points and nearly 10 places ahead of the 14th-sitting Red Devils. The Magpies have not allowed a goal in 360 minutes of Premier League play.
Man United are back in shock, now the losers of five of their last six Premier League games, and new manager Ruben Amorim will be furious in his team’s first half.
Newcastle United failed to qualify for Europe last year, and that’s probably disappointing to a team when there are the most productive talents in the squad. There were reports of possible discomfort for Alexander Isak as the club sits outside the doors that the European puts on the start of the season, so this streak of sizzling white papers is huge for a couple of reasons. This is especially true when the Magpies have spent so much that they attract world-class players. Isk, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes need to play under European lights, and Eddie Howe said after the game that he cares as much about guarding bodies as he does about getting reinforcements.
“We do not need to lose anybody,” Howe said. We have a smart balance on the aspect and we do not need to disturb him. “
Amorim opted for a midfield base of Christian Eriksen and Casemiro. Newcastle’s strong midfield trio bossed them all over the pitch. If there was any question what wasn’t going well, Amorim showed us his mistake when he withdrew a seemingly-healthy Joshua Zirkzee for Kobbie Mainoo after 33 minutes. Mainoo was arguably the Man of the Match from that point forward, and made a massive difference. Amorim says it’s all about training, comfort in his system. and finding a base but today it was also about a personnel mistake. And his players are so frail right now that they could’ve been down three or four. Even two-nil turned out to be too big of an ask.

2-0, 84 ‘.
A good corner from the hosts meeds Leny Yoro, and the back is a whisker away from turning his header inside the far post.
Not done yet, 74′.
Sandro Tonali, Alexander Isak and Jelinton were among the players who helped Newcastle react to a feeling of why they had been Man United’s Go-Go.
The Magpies are slowing things down and holding the ball a bit, and you’d assume some changes are soon to come for Howe.
2-0 Newcastle, 71′.
Alejandro Garnacho and Leny Yoro come to Martínez and Casemiro.
Harry Maguire cuts off the message and Man United’s bet on the rebound is blocked by Lewis Hall.
It’s much older than the hosts, and Mainoo played a big part in it.
The veteran guard, who has played well, sits with an obvious left thigh injury. They hope it’s a cramp.
Valentino Livramento is in position and soon appears to be deployed as we reach the 57th minute, but Trippier has returned to the fray.
Sire enough, he blocks a cross. Livramento is then inserted into the fray.
The Red Devils, supported through Mainoo, kept the ball for much of the first 10 minutes half of the moment.
Casemiro sliced a shot wide and Newcastle had a short free kick routine well defended by the hosts.
Still 2-0 to Eddie Howe’s visitors as we hit the 56th minute.
The submarine had given the Man United a little more capture and the Red Devils will feel satisfied to enter the team corridor with the possibility of fixing things.
They are hooked off the field.
It is true that Newcastle have conceded one goal in the Premier League in 315 minutes.
Shots are 11-3 for the visitors, with four shots on going on Onana’s goal.
Possession’s about 50:50, but Newcastle boasts a 1.92-0.35 xG gap.
Man United have Marcus Rashford, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho on the bench to attack, along with goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, midfielder Toby Collyer and defenders Leny Yoro, Tyrell Malacia and youngster Godwill Kukonki.
Fabian Schar makes a depressing pass from his own third in stoppage.
Kobbie Mainoo takes it away and feeds it to Casemiro, who writes down a purpose that is higher and broader.
The hosts’ xG just jumped from 0.17 to 0.35, no matter — symbolic, if not shambolic.
Joshua Zirkzee is leaving and in his place is Kobbie Mainoo.
Now, a first proper chance for the hosts, as Rasmus Hojlund beats Jacob Murphy and dinks a shot over Martin Dubravka but it just misses the far post.
35′
Andre Onana had to squeeze in a strong shot from Lewis Hall for a double, then Newcastle temporarily won the ball and Sandro Tonali forces Onana to concede a corner with a decent effort.
Trippier’s corner kick near the post has Olympic intentions, but Onana manages a powerful first shot for the corner.
This time, he tries to pass backwards and sends it too high.
Anthony Gordon has the ball on the left and a cross that beats Mazraoui.
Maguire sucks Isak, and Martinez is slow for Jelinton.
The Brazilian is too big and he pounds the header past Onana.
Away supporters are audible. Home followers. . . well. . . .
Bruno Guimaraes turns Christian Eriksen to the most sensible 18 and sends a long ball on the bottom line of UTD man.
Isak is 1v1 with Andre Onana on the right, but the keeper stands his ground and easily catches a would-be dink.
1-0 Newcastle, 19′.
At least to start this match, the Magpies fly around Old Trafford as if it were dirt.
Manuel Ugarte’s bite is missing in midfield, and Bruno Fernandes’ absence turns out to prevent the Magpies from respecting everything that can take place at the top.
Dreadful defending from Man United, or at least dreadful mental play.
Lewis Hall crosses the box and receives a slight deactivation of Ussair Mazraoui’s thigh.
In one or the other, Harry Maguire, Diogo Dalot, nor Lisandro Martínez are attached to Alexandre Isak, who returns home.
Isak is the one of the season.
The absences of Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte mean that the hosts will lose their most productive defensive midfielder, as well as their most productive attacker. Kobbie Mainos starts on the bench, and Marcus Rashford is also there after several games away from Day 18.
Newcastle has its lineup, at least until Sven Botman returns from his long-term injury, which will be soon. Harvey Barnes starts on the bench and Kieran Trippier receives the call from Valentino Livramento at right-back.
Newcastle won three of the four against Man Utd, adding a victory of the League Cup in Old Trafford in November 2023, but his last victory in the Premier League in the Theater of Dreams was on December 7, 2013, when Yohan Cabaye scored the goal.
Onana, Mazraoui, de Ligt, Maguire, Martínez, Dalot, Eriksen, Casemiro, Zirkzee, Amad, Hojlund
Dubravka, Hall, Schar, Burn, Trippier, Tonali, Guimaraes, Joelinton, Murphy, Gordon, Isak
The Red Devils (14th – 22 points) have already lost four home games this season (combined score of 12-2), adding the last two at Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth, two teams that have been in the top six lately. Amorim predicted this earlier this month, after being unbeaten in his first 3 matches, that “the typhoon will come” by his looks while the luminaries are being collected and that the (considerable lack of depth) of the team is tested. Stormy indeed. Captain Bruno Fernandes was suspended after being sent off the day after Christmas, seven minutes before Manuel Ugarte received his fifth yellow card of the season and a one-match suspension. Return to Casemiro and Christian Eriksen in midfield?
Newcastle (fifth with 29 points) would be among the four most sensible if the forest only lost one or two points, but instead, the Magpies go unnoticed by now. Two weeks ago, Eddie Howe’s team took 12 position with only 19 goals in 15 games, and some questions were asked. Since then? Three consecutive victories, 11 marked goals, or granted. Alexander Isak and Jacob Murphy have been insultable with 8 goals and 3 assists between them in 3 games.
OUT: Bruno Fernandes (suspension), Manuel Ugarte (suspension), Mason Mount (thigh), Luke Shaw (foot), Victor Lindelof (unspecified)
OUT: Nick Pope (knee), Emil Krafth (shoulder), Callum Wilson (thigh), Jamaal Lascelles (knee) | QUESTIONABLE: Valentino Livramento (illness), Sven Botman (knee), Kieran Trippier (undisclosed)
A third straight home defeat for Man United? How can you see any other outcome? Manchester United 1-2 Newcastle.
